Presentation at the AAC&U 2022 Annual Meeting as a Pre-Meeting Workshop.
Responsible citizens need the agility to navigate a changing information landscape. Intentionally designing learning experiences that integrate accessible Information Literacy (IL) skills for all students is a crucial step towards educational justice, a paramount responsibility in the democratic mission of our institutions. With this goal, the University of Rhode Island’s Office for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning has partnered with instruction librarians since 2018 in developing and facilitating a High Impact Teaching Seminar for faculty. Participants will learn about the seminar’s theoretical framework, impact and structure, engage in …

Basic Communication Course Annual
This study explored the formal and informal resources students enrolled in a basic communication course use to gather information and receive feedback about their course experience, including presentations and work in the class. To do so, an online survey was completed by 393 students at three universities. The data were analyzed thematically using an iterative process facilitated through NVivo coding software. This process not only allowed for a descriptive summary of the students’ responses and the creation of a typology of resources, but also revealed four emergent themes related to student motivations to seek out and use sources of information/feedback: …

Spectators Or Patriots? Citizens In The Information Age, Amrita Dhawan
Spectators Or Patriots? Citizens In The Information Age, Amrita Dhawan
Publications and Research
In theory, a strong democracy rests on robust citizen participation. The practice in most democracies is quite different. This gap presents a challenge, which can be narrowed by augmenting civic education to bring it up to date with the current information environment and thus give citizens the opportunity to participate. Robert Dahl’s work on democracy provides a model that looks at this problem structurally. He writes about the ideals and the actual institutions necessary for a democracy and if we situate his model in the modern information environment we get a better idea of how to improve civic education. Successful …

Separating Wheat From Chaff: Helping First-Year Students Become Information Savvy, Trudi E. Jacobson, Beth Mark
Library Staff Presentations & Publications
Many traditional first-year students arrive on college and university campuses with a great deal of experience in searching the Internet. In fact, they can find prodigious amounts of information with relative ease—as evidenced by the lists of Web sites used to document many of their research papers. Most of these students, however, lack the critical-thinking skills and database-searching proficiency necessary for them to fine-tune their information searches. They need to know how to focus their topics, where (in addition to the Internet) to search, and how to evaluate and use the information they retrieve—skills commonly encompassed in the phrase “information …

Teaching Anxious Students Skills For The Electronic Library, Beth Mark, Trudi E. Jacobson
Library Staff Presentations & Publications
Some students immediately feel at home in today's technology-saturated library, but many others have difficulty navigating the myriad of electronic sources in most academic libraries. It is estimated that as many as one-third of the college students in the United States suffer from technophobia and are anxious about using computers. In addition to coping with computer technology, many first-year college students are intimidated by the size and complexity of academic libraries (Mellon 1986). In short, just when students most need to become competent users of information technology, anxieties can cause them to avoid the library altogether (Warmkessel 1992).
