The Department of Pre-collegiate and Educational Support Programs provides low-income and first-generation students, students at high risk for academic failure, and students with disabilities with the skills, knowledge, and motivation to successfully enroll in and complete programs of post-secondary education. This mission is achieved through seven programs that address a range of learning needs and serve pre-collegiate students (middle and high school, veterans) and UMass Boston undergraduates.

The ANALA Collaborative is the newly-formed umbrella for the four UMass Boston racial and ethnic institutes. This year, with help from a team from the College of Management’s Emerging Leaders Program, we have come together to form ANALA in recognition of the area’s increasing racial and ethnic diversity and the need for majority-minority communities to work together toward common goals. While each of the four institutes will retain its separate identity and programs, we will also place greater emphasis on collaborative efforts in the service of our common mission and vision.

UMass Boston students are a force for driving the shape, structure, and scope of the international programs that are offered at UMass Boston and beyond campus borders. The Office of International and Transnational Affairs offers outstanding UMass Boston students the opportunity to further their experiences in international leadership through the Global Ambassadors Program. Each semester, a select group of UMass Boston students is accepted to the year-long certificate program through which they spread the understanding and appreciation of different cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints.

The Honors College aims to serve as a crucible for curricular innovation by enriching and deepening classroom study with on-the-ground learning. The symposium is a year-long course, with the winter session field trip giving students a two-week immersion in the details of HIV/AIDS health care delivery in one province of South Africa. Upon return, students volunteer at health centers or nonprofits exploring related topics, while continuing to study the complexity of South Africa’s history and its attitudes and approaches toward HIV/AIDS at the medical, cultural, economic, and social levels.

The Campus Kitchen at the University of Massachusetts Boston (CKUMB) is a part of The Campus Kitchens Project. (CKP), a national network of student volunteers, works to rescue excess food to create meals for those in need. CKUMB opened in 2010 to provide meals for the Dorchester community. By taking the initiative to run a community kitchen, students develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills, along with a commitment to serve their community, that they will carry with them into future careers.
