An Overview Of Foreign Investment In Nigeria: 1960 - 1995, V.A Odozi

This paper examines the crucial role of direct foreign investment in Nigeria's economic development, with particular emphasis on transfer of technology, support for balance of payments and the facilitation of the structural adjustment programme. The paper then evaluates the country's efforts at promoting foreign investment and highlights important lessons to be learnt over the years. On the basis of available data, the paper believes foreign investment out-turn in Nigeria was generally unsatisfactory. Between 1970 and 1976, investment inflow through existing enterprises in Nigeria rose in nominal terms from N251.0 million to N757.4 million. Thereafter, it fluctuated freely, rising to N2,193.4 …

The Multiplier Effect: Singapore's Hospitality Industry, Habibullah Khan, Sock-Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh

Tourism's contribution to Singapore's economy has increased over time. Tourism contributed 11.9% to Singapore's GDP in 1992, about half of that from direct revenues. Indirect and induced sources contributed about equally to the other half. While the direct effect of tourist expenditures on the Singapore economy are predominant, the indirect and induced effects are also significant, indicating strong sectoral linkages within the local economy, especially with respect to the hospitality industry.

On June 17, 1995 the town of Franklin, Massachusetts commissioned a community forum to articulate a vision for the future of their town. During a four hour period the forum elicited input from more than fifty concerned citizens, business leaders and town officials. The Center for Economic Development (CED) acted as the facilitators. The report produced created a Vision Statement and illustrated the results of the Visual Preference exercise and survey held during the forum.

This paper develops a model of migration integrating equilibrium and disequilibrium components in which individuals and firms form rational expectations about future opportunities. Levels of migration are derived as functions of variations in factors influencing migrant labor demand ("economic opportunity") and migrant labor supply ("residential amenities"). The model is used to estimate the extent to which migration in the United States over the period 1950-1980 is determined by these two classes of exogenous factors.
