Economic Indicators And Special Distribution Of Private Playgrounds In Greater Irbid Municipality: A Study In Service Geography, Omar Al-Dayaflah, Ahmad Khawaldeh
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims to define the general and spatial characteristics of special playgrounds within the greater Irbid municipality. It also analyzes the reasons of their locational selection and provides the qualitative and quantitative analysis of this service in the study area. In order to achieve the aims of this study, a descriptive and analytical approach is employed. The results show that the reasons of the positional selection of these playgrounds are due to their accessibility and vehicle parks availability. Moreover, the study finds that the allocation for each person from these playgrounds is 4322 person to every playground (4322 person/ …

Movements In C Minor: Vocal Soundscapes In Eastern Amazonia (Araweté), Guilherme Orlandini Heurich
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article examines the capture of forest spirits through music in the Anĩ pihi speech-songs of the Araweté, a small Amerindian society in Eastern Amazonia, Brazil. The Anĩ pihi are unique in their combination of spoken and sung forms, in which spirits and divinities are voiced by a ritual specialist. I explore how particular sounds index the presence of different kinds of others (gods and spirits), and how these sounds are, in turn, related to the use of reported speech – in other words, how others talk about other others in sung form. As such, the Anĩ pihi are a …

Camaraderie, Mentorship, And Manhood: Contemporary Indigenous Identities Among The A’Uwẽ (Xavante) Of Central Brazil, James R. Welch
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Rites of passage and associated social processes and configurations can foster a sense of shared purpose, fraternity, and dedication to community through common experiences of group trials and commitment. A’uwẽ (Xavante) age organization entails the social production of manhood through a privileged form of male camaraderie constructed through age sets and mentorship, rooted in the shared experience of rites of passage and coresidence in the pre-initiate boys’ house. This process is central to how A’uwẽ men understand themselves, their social relations with certain delineated segments of society, and their ethnic identity. It is a basic social configuration contributing to the …

Ticuna Ceramics Amidst The Expansion Of Illicit Coca: Rendering New Relations, Manuel Martín Brañas, Sydney M. Silverstein, Margarita Del Aguila Villacorta, Ricardo Zárate Gómez, Cecilia Núñez Pérez, Alonso Cándido Yumbato, Juan José Palacios Vega, Rosario Rodríguez Romaní
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In Ticuna communities across Amazonia, ceramics are useful objects employed for cooking and storage. Their practical importance, however, does not describe the extent of their significance. In the following article, we consider Ticuna ceramics and ceramic-making practices as a means of studying the changes set in motion by the transformation of Ticuna ancestral lands in Peru’s lowland Amazonian region into zones of illicit coca cultivation. Drawing on mixed-methods ethnographic research, including participant observation, interviews, and a participatory film project focused on ceramic production, we evaluate contemporary practices of ceramic-making within three Peruvian Ticuna communities in the context of these transformations, …

Of Movements And Markets: Religious Competition And The Problem Of Black Church Relevance, Omar M. Mcroberts
Of Movements And Markets: Religious Competition And The Problem Of Black Church Relevance, Omar M. Mcroberts
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
Why do cross-denominational public religious movements such as the Southern Christian Leadership Conference appear, despite the market-like competitive behavior of churches? Religious economy theory offers one set of explanations, based on a supply-side approach to the dynamics of numeric religious growth and decline. Namely, ecumenical movements are engaged by denominations, or religious firms, in membership decline. The history of national Black ecumenical movements, however, points to ways that religious economic theorizing fails to account for the multiple modes of social consciousness regarding church survival that motivate institutional religious activity. Black churches have existed not merely as a market but as …

Potential Water Harvesting Sites Selection Using Spatial Multi-Criteria Modeling In Wadi Al Mujib Basin In Southern Jordan, Samer Alnawaiseh, Maysoon Alzghoul
Association of Arab Universities Journal for Arts مجلة اتحاد الجامعات العربية للآداب
This study aims to select potential sites for water harvesting by using Spatial Multi-Criteria modeling in the Wadi Al-Mujib basin as this method is one of the most suitable methods applied in arid and semi-arid areas to take advantage of rainwater. The significance of the study is to identify the best sites of pits and dams suitable for collecting rainwater in the Wadi Mujib basin through developing a spatial model based on the technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS). In analyzing and identifying the best suitable sites in the Wadi Mujib basin, this paper uses an …

Defining A Region: The Great River Road In Missouri, Evan Arthur Telle, David R. Perkins Iv
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The Great River Road (GRR) is an established roadway along both the east and west banks of the Mississippi River which serves to connect people to the geography of this area. In this study, the socio-economic characteristics present in Missouri are analyzed to determine if a more formal GRR region exists in Missouri. County-level data from five-year estimates (2014 – 2018) conducted by the United States Census Bureau are used to give greater insight on any unifying characteristics the GRR may have in Missouri. Social, economic, housing, and demographic information combined with spatial pattern analysis help identify evidence of a …

THE Actual Demolition of South Atlasic Piedment: Example of Down Stream Part of the Irguiten Fan, Taroudant, Morocco
At the present time, the downstream part of the Irguitene fan (Souss Valley, Morocco) is currently undergoing intense erosion. Morphogenic processes operating on the Holocene fine deposits lead to the development of a spectacular badland landscape.
These badlands in retourn evolve in pace with move a headwater ero-sion.
Two factors are responsible for their development, the first and principal is an anthropogenic, it is linked to the introduction of the sugar cane in the Souss valley from 12e to the l 7e …

HREAT TO ANIMAL CARRYING CAPACITY AND LAND DOMAIN IN TOGO: CASE OF NORTHERN SAVANNA
The populations of the northern savannahs of Togo draw most of the resources they need for their subsistence from their environment. Food products, fodder, wood for crafts, but above all construction and firewood, traditional medicine products, etc. The natural environment! provides in addition to other needs other functions: in fact, vegetation provides shelter for humans and animals, protects the soil against erosion and maintains its fertility, etc. This vegetation also forms the privileged support of the spiritual life of a good number of local populations through the …

Economic Investment by Moroccan Nationals Abroad in the Small Towns of Souss
Migrations in the Souss are characterized by their diversity and their historical origin. These are migrations oriented for several centuries towards foreign countries and the interior of the country. Domestically, the chleuhs (Soussis) are present in the various towns as traders. As for external emigration, they (the Soussis) have been moving for a very long time towards Sudan (Sub-Saharan Africa); and at the beginning of the 20th century, they were attracted by agricultural colonization in Algeria. But the most important movement of the Soussis abroad is that which …

Moroccan Nationals Abroad and Investment in Real Estate: Development or Under-development? -The Case of Agadir-
Since the 1920, many authors have tried to study the movements of populations. But it is only from the 1960s that we can speak of scientific research on migration. At the beginning, the emphasis was placed on Moroccan emigration abroad, because it represented for rural societies one of the most effective means of resisting the effects of the socio-spatial destruction disseminated by cities and their actors. (G. SIMON, 1983). Today, the city is gradually and closely linked to the migratory phenomenon both upstream and downstream: …

Disruption To Ems Service During Flood Scenarios In Western North Carolina, Julia Cardwell
Disruption To Ems Service During Flood Scenarios In Western North Carolina, Julia Cardwell
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Given that the intensity and frequency of flood events will increase under climate change scenarios, the ability to model potential impacts, such as those to healthcare access, will become increasingly important. This study analyzes EMS response time under both a historical (Tropical Storm Fred in August 2021) and a modeled flood event (FEMA’s 100-yr floodplain) in western North Carolina, a predominantly rural area. The results indicate that network disruption during flood events is a concern in the study area, and while the historical event produced moderate disruption, the 100-yr event produced major disruptions throughout the study area. This research emphasizes …

Sorokdo: From The Island Of Stigma To The Island Of Historical Reflection, Eun-Hye Choung, Hyun-Jin Cho, Jewon Ryu, Suh-Hee Choi
International Journal of Geospatial and Environmental Research
This article focuses on Sorokdo Island (Jeollanam-do, South Korea) as a remnant of the stigmatized landscape reflecting Hansen’s Disease and the Japanese colonial power. Sorokdo began to be stigmatized due to the Japanese colonial rule in the early 20th century when patients with Hansen's Disease were forced to relocate there, suffering from human rights violations and labor exploitation. Isolation and the management of the patients by suppression and control were justified with the logic of modern values of sanitization supported by the colonial rule. Stigma has remained even after the liberation from the colonial power. Continuously recognized by people as …
The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini
The Penn Effect And Marx's International Law Of Value: A Review Of Value And Unequal Exchange By Andrea Ricci, Giuseppe Quattromini
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Placing itself in the revival of interest in unequal exchange, Ricci's book claims the need to give the theory a new conceptual foundation to justify recent proposals to estimate unequal exchange on the basis of the so-called Penn effect. In order to do that, Ricci identifies Marx's international law of value as a fitting theoretical framework and hence develops a radically innovative theory of global capitalist exploitation through international trade. Finally, he assesses the magnitude of unequal exchange over the past three decades by producing estimates based on the proposed approach.
Trade Books, Comics, And Local History: Exploring Fred Shuttleworth’S Fight For Civil Rights, Jeremiah Clabough, Caroline Sheffield
Trade Books, Comics, And Local History: Exploring Fred Shuttleworth’S Fight For Civil Rights, Jeremiah Clabough, Caroline Sheffield
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This one-week project utilized the trade book Black and White: The Confrontation between Reverend Fred L. Shuttlesworth and Eugene Bull Connor (Brimner, 2011) to explore non-violent advocacies during the 1950s and 1960s civil rights movement. Students read selected excerpts from the trade book and created a comic narrative to convey their understanding of the civil rights advocacies of Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth in Birmingham, Alabama. The students were able to accurately portray Rev. Shuttlesworth’s actions in a cohesive narrative using evidence from the trade book within their comics. The students demonstrated a solid understanding of non-violent advocacies, and why these methods …
Historical Inquiry: Who Has The Power? Using Film To Introduce Students To Medieval Social Class Structures, Megan Todd, Janie Hubbard
Historical Inquiry: Who Has The Power? Using Film To Introduce Students To Medieval Social Class Structures, Megan Todd, Janie Hubbard
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Using film in the classroom to teach history has long been endorsed as an effective pedagogical method when the lessons’ purposes and goals are clearly supported with facts. This article, which includes a National Council for the Social Studies C3 inquiry-based lesson plan, is targeted for educators who aspire to help students understand basic European Medieval history and engage in critical thinking. Medieval history is listed in many U.S. state curriculum standards and international teaching benchmarks; thus, this lesson contributes a teaching-ready source, particularly to introduce students to historical concepts, geographies, and politics (i.e., power structures). Clips from A Knight’s …

A New Method To Bridge New Materialism And Emotional Mapping: Spatio-Emotional Experiences In Disaster-Affected Brazilian Favelas, Gemma Sou, Juliana Carvalho, Natalia Cidade, Maria Eugenia
The Qualitative Report
Within the field of emotional mapping, and mapping more broadly, nonhuman things are often understood as mere instruments - they have utility but not agency to shape meaning-making. In this paper we experiment with a new method that aims to challenge the dualism between human and non-human things by bridging new materialism and participatory emotional mapping. We experimented with this “new materialist methodology” during a one-day workshop to explore residents’ spatio-emotional experiences in a disaster-affected favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Reflecting on this one-day workshop, we argue that materials with diverse colors, textures, shapes, densities, weights, and smells are …

Travel Agencies And Tourist Guides Adapting To Crisis: The Portuguese Case, Ilídia C. G. Carvalho
International Journal of Tour Guiding Research
Tourism is constantly changing and new paradigms arise. Most recently, travel agencies and tourist guides have been facing difficulties and have had to quickly adapt themselves to be able to keep a position in the tourism market. COVID-19 brought major changes to travel and experience in destinations and it certainly increased the use of technology, which has totally changed communication systems and relationships in tourism. For this paper, interviews with Portuguese travel agents and tourist guides were carried out and were later analysed allowing the author to gain insights into the current situation regarding these two stakeholders, which were previously …

Smart City Tours As An Innovative Way To (Re)Discover Urban Environments In An Italian Context, Miriam L. Weiß
International Journal of Tour Guiding Research
This article explores the foundations upon which to build innovation and further professionalise the tour guiding sector in an Italian context. It is based on a cooperation initiative started in March 2020 just at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic which proposes smart city tours as innovative, sustainable, and creative ways to (re)discover urban environments with the expected impact to make tour participants think, influence post-tour behaviour towards sustainability, and to provide a differentiated view of a visited place. The study is designed as a formative evaluation prior to introducing measures that allow further exploitation of the potential for smart …
