Nature conservation efforts in Libya focus mainly on the protection of some forest and wildlife areas in small designated national parks in the Jabal al-Akhdar and few other locations in the west of the country. However, wetlands did not receive equal recognition. Perhaps, lack of environmental awareness and the absence of functional and legal definitions of wetlands and their habitats in the country contributed to their exclusion from national protection programs and, consequently, to their degradation. Evaluation of wetlands, both within and outside urban areas, conducted as part of the Designation and Classification of Nature Reserves project in Libya, represents …

Habitat wetlands in Libya may be grouped into several distinct varieties, according to climate, water supply, soils, and biotic diversity. They include coastal Sabkhas (salt marshes), karst lakes, Wadi estuaries, below sea-level desert lakes, and balat flats (playas) where the soil is saturated part of some rainy seasons forming a kind of ephemeral, shallow lakes in pre-desert areas. The most prominent, however, are the extensive coastal salt marshes. These have either organic or inorganic soils, or both, depending on their location and climate conditions. Soils common to most coastal wetlands are composed largely of inorganic material in the form of …

Libya, which is well over 80% urban, is placed in the upper echelons of the most urbanized countries in the world as the majority of its citizens now live in urban areas of different sizes and functions. However, when rapid urban growth trends were examined more closely, serious problems come to the fore, depicting key challenges to the sustainability of both urban landscapes and elements of the natural environment. Specifically, unregulated urban growth and the proliferation of scattered housing in the urban fringe areas of many cities have resulted in land use conflicts and serious ecological problems.

Some observers of the current Libyan scene wonder why the course of the country’s ongoing revolution differed so markedly, in both duration and style, from what happened in neighboring Tunisia and Egypt. The answer may lie in our understanding of Libya’s geography, equally different from its two neighbors.

In these glorious days in which the Libyan people are courageously restoring their national identity and enthusiastically reshaping their future, calamities seem a trivial price to pay compared to what they expect to gain. Despite the souring of their agony to unprecedented levels, their morale remains very high as they fervently resort to a bygone era for inspiration and hope.

A New Democracy Paradigm In The Making, Mansour M. Elbabour

Winds of change are blowing strong in Libya which, in these historic months, is witnessing its own version of the Arab Spring, though ours is a rather thunderous one and, sadly, very bloody. Will the present awakening culminate in the rise of a new paradigm of political thinking as Libyans across their vast country make their utmost efforts to get rid of a much hated era of ruthless repression and political absurdity? Many indications support the premise that the writing of a genuine democracy paradigm is underway.

Gross misconceptions and stereotypes abound in the literature about alleged threats to Libyan national unity due to its geography, tribal background, regional disparity and the uneven distribution of population.

Of all the generalizations commonly made by foreign observers and subjectively augmented by Gaddafi about Libya, especially during the people’s present remarkable quest for freedom and democracy, one of the least valid is that tribalism is pervasive in the Libyan society and its politics.

Sense Of Being In Place: A Geographical And Phenomenological Perspective (In Arabic), Mansour M. Elbabour
Sense Of Being In Place: A Geographical And Phenomenological Perspective (In Arabic), Mansour M. Elbabour

Humanistic geography seeks to achieve an understanding of the role played by human awareness and human consciousness in shaping space and the acquisition, on the part of individuals and groups, of a sense of place. This is in sharp contrast to the 'scientistic' methods in studying man which tend to diminish the significance of human experience, sense, awareness, and knowledge. This paper has the general aim of identifying the philosophical orientations which have either explicitly or implicitly influenced the rise of the humanistic perspective in geography in the early 1970's as an extension of the behavioral approaches in geographical research. …

Patterns Of Ecosystem Fragmentation In Jabal Al-Akhdar, Libya: A Look At Landscape Ecology (In Arabic) , Mansour M. Elbabour
Mansour M Elbabour
Abstract Landscape fragmentation is a growing problem throughout the region of Jabal al-Akhdar in northeastern Libya where forest fragmentation has been a common occurrence in the past few decades. A greater part of the surviving shrub cover in the upper and lower terraces of Jabal al-Akhdar and their escarpments consist of isolated patches and disconnected corridors. The primary cause of fragmentation is agricultural development, especially clearing the land for dry farming. This paper presents some of the principles of landscape ecology as they pertain to the management of natural resources. A further aim is to enhance public awareness of the …

Systems Of Cities: An Alternative Approach To Medieval Islamic Urbanism, Mansour M. Elbabour
Systems Of Cities: An Alternative Approach To Medieval Islamic Urbanism, Mansour M. Elbabour
Mansour M Elbabour
Over the past half century, medieval Islamic urbanism has been viewed in terms of a single and restricted model, namely the "Islamic City" concept. The essence of this paradigm, usually expressed in such terms as "cultural tradition" or "Muslim urban archetype," is that all Muslim cities share a common character derived mainly from the religion of Islam and, therefore, they could be explained only in such context. The "urban system" concept, which deals with networks of cities, is suggested here as an alternative framework which will integrate the different approaches to medieval Islamic urbanism and help clarify the place of …
