Technological tools allow the generation of large volumes of data. For example satellite images aid in the study of spatiotemporal phenomena in a range of disciplines such as urban planning environmental sciences and health care. Thus remote-sensing experts must handle various and complex image sets for their interpretations. The GIS community has undertaken significant work in describing spatiotemporal features and standard specifications nowadays provide design foundations for GIS software and spatial databases. Computational measures of semantic similarity between geographic terms provide valuable support across geographic information retrieval data mining and information integration. To date a wide variety of approaches to geo-semantic similarity have been devised. A judgment of similarity is not intrinsically right or wrong but obtains a certain degree of cognitive plausibility depending on how closely it mimics human behavior. Thus selecting the most appropriate measure for a specific task is a significant challenge. OGC Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Coverage Service (WCS) specifications allow interoperable access to distributed geospatial data made available through spatial data infrastructures (SDIs). Ubiquitous sensor stations continuously measure several geophysical fields over large zones and long (potentially unbounded) periods of time. However observations can never cover every location nor every time. In addition due to its huge volume the data produced cannot be entirely recorded for future analysis. Geoportals are increasingly used for searching viewing and downloading spatial data. This study concerns methods to improve the visual presentation in viewing services. When spatial data in a viewing service are taken from more than one source there are often syntactic semantic topological and geometrical conflicts that prevent maps being fully consistent. In this study we extend a standard view service with methods to solve these conflicts. Many spatiotemporal data mining methods are dependent on how relationships between a spatiotemporal unit and its neighbors are defined. These relationships are often termed the neighborhood of a spatiotemporal object. The focus of this paper is the discovery of spatiotemporal neighborhoods to find automatically spatiotemporal sub-regions in a sensor dataset. This research is motivated by the need to characterize large sensor datasets like those found in oceanographic and meteorological research.
