An Assessment Of Air Quality In And Around Gwagwalada Abattoir, Gwagwalada, Abuja, Fct., John Yakubu Magaji Phd

This work attempted an assessment of air quality in and around Gwagwalada abattoir. Air samples were collected from six points around the abattoir and recorded insitu for analysis. The following parameters were investigated; Particulate Matter (PM), Carbon monoxide (CO), Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Ammonia (NH3), Chlorine (CL2) and Hydrogen cyanide. The statistical test employed was the Student t-test in verifying the hypothesis. This research work is an attempt to assess “the Socio–economic Impact of Gurara dam on the surrounding communities”. This dam is located within two local governments that shared boundary; these are Kagarko and Kachia local governments in Kaduna state. The study investigates the impact of the dam construction on agricultural production and occupation of the people of the study area as well as the benefits derived. It also examines the extent of resettlement and compensation. Survey method was adapted, the respondents were selected randomly. Remarkably few studies have been undertaken to assess the level of university geography resources within Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. While reviews of the state of geography have been done in some African countries, none have been attempted at the continental scale. Such assessments are a starting point for beginning to understand whether or not African students and governments have adequate access to sufficient amounts of geographic knowledge, perspectives and techniques; skills which are increasingly crucial for surviving in a world dominated by rapid change. Google Earth Meets Higher Ed: Reflections On Neogeography, Cathy Moulder

Educators in many disciplines are embracing the wonders of Google Earth to engage their students. This session explains the context of change in education (Web 2.0 and the NetGen students) and how these two trends merge in a new area called Neogeography. The session presents preliminary findings of a research project to identify the early adoption of one Neogeography (Google Earth). Results show a developing use of Google Earth in course assignments at the college and university level, with several resources identified that will become available in summer 2008.

This chapter examines the evolving dynamic among cotton production for the world market, environmental degradation, and global development paradigms in Mali. It examines how cotton production policy in Mali has changed over time and how this evolution implicate globalization discourse. It also examines the environmental impacts of cotton production, how this is problematized, and how solutions are evoked within globalization discourse.
