No More Hidden Secrets: Human Rights Violations And Remote Sensing, Tommy O'Connell, Stephen Young
Stephen Young
Aim: This study used both high resolution and medium resolution satellite imagery to test three semi-automated remote sensing methods, in an attempt to identify useful tools to support eye-witness testimony and reports on human rights violations. As huts are routinely burned down during attacks on a village, particularly in Sudan, the number of huts and villages burned can be used to corroborate on-the-ground reports.
Methods: Three remote sensing methods (Supervised Classification, Change Detection, and Feature Extraction) were performed on imagery from both before the attacks in February 2006 and after the attacks to examine any useful trends that could be …

Human-caused biodiversity loss is a global problem, large carnivores are particularly threatened, and the tiger (Panthera tigris) is among the world’s most endangered large carnivores. The South China tiger (Panthera tigris amoyensis) is the most critically endangered tiger subspecies and is considered functionally extinct in the wild. The government of China has expressed its intent to reintroduce a small population of South China tigers into a portion of their historic range as part of a larger goal to recover wild tiger populations in China. This would be the world’s first major tiger reintroduction program. A free-ranging population of 15–20 tigers …

To the street hawker, it is a means of making a living but to the managers of the metropolis, street hawking is a menace. These differences in perception have led to a game plan tied to spatio-temporal diurnal traffic regimes. While the city authorities plan may be to evict the street hawkers, the plan of the hawkers is to outwit the city authorities through make-shift hawking patterns in order to make a living. The difference in the two positions can be characterized by the city manager’s need for clean and less congested city streets, and the hawker’s desire to sell …

The paper examines the industrial landscape evolution of Bistrita subcarpathian Valley, focusing on the causes, and especially on the consequences of those rapid changes over the territory. The area under study has favorable conditions for the development of the industrial sector, being an area of old housing and having access to natural and human resources needed for this type of activity. The methodology was achieved through the spatial and temporal analysis of cartographic documents from different suggestive periods, carefully selection of the bibliographical mater lis, and through a detailed field study for validating the results of the laboratory and providing …

State-of-art long term plan for Solid Waste Management (SWM) including collection, transportation and disposal of Solid Waste (SW), as well as for monitoring of SWM, by generating integrated solution could be generated through the application of advanced technologies so that the policy interventions may prove to be highly successful and cost-effective. Currently, SWM plans are either non-existent or are riddled with serious problems and limitations. SWM plans are extremely expensive. Long term planning could be done for collection, transportation and disposal of SW in such a manner that Waste Collection Points, transportation routes, schedules regarding transportation, loading, unloading, stoppage etc, …

Watershed land and hydrology are resources that are very important in agricultural development. Adequate and proper land use planning and management of these resources is of ultimate importance in sustainable development. In this study remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were used to generate information on the current status and utilization potentials of the Kubili watershed and generate local specific micro watershed development plans for the area. The study revealed that about 33.25 per cent of the land cover is used for rain fed agriculture that lacks sufficient soil and moisture to support good yield. The drainage density …

This report documents procedures used to geo-reference data in the FARS database. The scope of the work reported here is limited to New York State and to the period from 1996 to 2001. The expected audience of this report includes a general public interested in getting geo-referenced historical FARS data (i.e., shape file, arc/info coverage, SDTS) or in learning about implementing non-custom geo-referencing procedures in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The first part (section II, III) describes the source data and reference data. The second part (section IV, V) presents how to geo-reference the source data against reference data. More specifically, …
