This poster presented the library research instruction activities for a Georgia State University SOCI 3356 Queer Identities “Decades Paper” class assignment. For this assignment, students assume the imaginary identity of a teen/young adult “coming out” into a lesbian/gay/bisexual/trans/queer (LGBT/Q) sexual/gender identity during an assigned decade between the 1950s and the present. As this identity, they seek information sources from their decade appropriate/accessible to a teen/young adult and (1) write diary entries about how they, in this imaginary identity, responded to the information they found, and (2) reflect on their experience and what they learned from the exercise – relating the …

e examined competing feminist discourses regarding women’s involvement/portrayal in the sex work industry. Grounded in feminist theoretical and methodological perspectives, our discussions were guided by the following considerations: (1) What are the competing feminist discourses regarding sex work, and what are the similarities/differences between these discourses? (2) How are these competing discourses deployed in a global context, and what issues/concerns arise within a global consideration of sex work? Constructing The “Social Evil”: An Analysis Of Anti-Prostitution Crusades In Progressive-Era Chicago, 1907-1915, Mandy J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

This study analyzes anti-prostitution crusades in Chicago during the Progressive Era, using a social constructionist theoretical perspective to explore how crusaders constructed prostitution as a social problem. My multi-faceted theoretical framework drew on both social constructionist theories as well as social movement theories examining collective action frames as master frames. For organizational purposes, the separate analytical chapters examine different groups of crusaders: the crusaders against “white slavery,” those battling “vice,” and a group of Hull House women crusading against the “social evil.” My analyses revealed the following: (1) broader discourses present during the Progressive Era shaped the contours of the …
