Witness Of The Body: The Past, Present And Future Of Christian Martyrdom, Michael Budde
Witness Of The Body: The Past, Present And Future Of Christian Martyrdom, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
In an age of suicide bombers and paranoid political rhetoric, the concept of martyrdom can make ordinary Christians uncomfortable or even squeamish, filled simultaneously with fascination and with dread. In Witness of the Body, twelve scholars from across academic disciplines and church traditions attempt to demystify Christian martyrdom and resituate it within the everyday practices of the church. Beginning with the earliest church history, they explore the place of martyrdom in the church through all ages and into the future. Throughout, they remind readers that Christian martyrdom is neither a quick ticket to heaven nor a cheap political ploy, but …

Being Consumed: Economics And Christian Desire, William Cavanaugh
Being Consumed: Economics And Christian Desire, William Cavanaugh
William T. Cavanaugh
Are Christians for or against the free market? Should we not think of ourselves as consumers? Are we for or against globalization? How to we live in a world of scare resources? William Cavanaugh brings us a theological view and practice of everyday economic life with the use of Christian resources. He argues that we should not take the free market, consumer culture, globalization, and scarcity as givens, but change the terms of debate in each case. His consideration of the free market is not a question of for or against, but when exactly a market is truly free. He …

Conflicting Allegiances: The Church Based University Within A Liberal Democratic Society, Michael Budde
Conflicting Allegiances: The Church Based University Within A Liberal Democratic Society, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
Michael L. Budde and John Wright's (editors) Conflicting Allegiances: The Church-Based University in a Liberal Democratic Society is the result of a conference of Christian scholars held in March 2002 at Point Loma Nazarene University (CA). At the request of Point Loma professor John Wright, Christian scholars from various traditions, academic institutions, and disciplines met on the Point Loma campus to discuss the relationship the Church shares with Christian institutions of higher education. Several scholars who contributed essays to this volume are members of the Ekklesia Project-a group seeking to invite "all Christians and churches to reclaim their vocation to …

The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
The Church As Counterculture, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
The question, "What does it mean to be 'the church'?" has always been among the most controversial and of vital concern to political, economic, and ecclesial leaders alike. How it is answered influences whether Christianity will be a force for legitimating or subverting existing secular relations of power, influence, and privilege. The Church as Counterculture enters the debates on Christian identity, purpose, and organization by calling for the churches to reclaim their roles as "communities of disciples"-distinct and distinctive groups formed by the priorities and practices of Jesus-to constitute a countercultural reality and challenge to secular society and existing power …

Torture And Eucharist: Theology, Politics, And The Body Of Christ, William Cavanaugh
Torture And Eucharist: Theology, Politics, And The Body Of Christ, William Cavanaugh
William T. Cavanaugh
"Cavanaugh begins with an engrossing analysis of the dynamics of torture and disappearance as a mode disciplining the body politic. He judiciously uses psychological and social scientific sources without letting them override the theological focus of the book. He then gives an equally engrossing account of the Church in Chile under Pinochet. His analyses both of Maritain and the 'New Christendom' ecclesiology provide as interesting critique of the failures of the Church to respond to Pinochet's repression, while his concluding chapter on eucharistic theology points towards the source of the successful responses made by the Church. Particularly useful and interesting …

The Two Churches: Catholicism And Capitalism In The World System, Michael Budde
The Two Churches: Catholicism And Capitalism In The World System, Michael Budde
Michael Budde
The single most important change now well under way within Catholicism is its transition from a First World to a Third World entity. How this enormous shift will affect the Catholic church's role in the world economy is the subject of Michael L. Budde's book, the first world systems study of the mutual interaction of religion and political economy in the 1990s. Budde's argument here is twofold. He contends that world Catholicism, led by its Third World majority (most notably in Latin America), will continue to develop in an increasingly anticapitalist direction; and he suggests that once-dominant First World Catholic …
