This poster presents an analysis into the integration of circular design principles within renewable energy policies, comparing the approaches of Illinois, USA, and Germany. With the global shift towards renewable energy to combat climate change, the sustainable management of end-of-life (EoL) renewable assets has become crucial. The study utilizes a thematic analysis to explore seven key policies from Illinois and five from Germany, employing NVivo software to dissect aspects such as design strategies, support for innovation, and enforcement mechanisms.

Habitat destruction is the leading cause of biodiversity loss in the US. Under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), habitat deemed essential to endangered and threatened species recovery is proposed as critical habitat (CH). CH areas are subject to regulations that could alter land development plans or increase costs. The potential economic opportunity cost created by CH regulations may lead to the exclusion of land proposed for CH designation, thereby reducing the conservation benefits of the CH rule. Cost-benefit analysis has become one of the principal components in the review process of environmental regulation. However, the valuation of environmental regulation poses a unique challenge, as the benefits of the rules issued by the Environmental Protection Agency are often non-monetized, whereas the costs are more readily monetized. To give weight to the very real but non-monetized benefits of environmental regulation, methodologies have been developed to mark the price of the non-marketable. Forwarding research analyzing the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Environmental Justice Small Grant (EJSG) program. According to the EPA, Environmental Justice is built around “the meaningful involvement of all people… with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies (EPA, 2014)”. The former research of Abel and Stephan analyzed grants years 1996-2002 and Sarver’s 2003-2011 analysis. Their analysis confirmed EPA’s EJSG program capacities have been granting civic capacity the least, which contradicts the EPA’s mission to EJSG program.
