A biology framework in Environmental Education can inspire biophilia, the love for the complex array of lifeforms on this planet, in students. In this paper, a simple, multi-scaled phylogenetic tree is presented to express such a framework. When viewing life from a framework such as a phylogenetic tree, the human species is seen as just one part of something vastly complex. This view is contrasted to another framework, more anthropocentric in nature, that seems to be more typical in the developed world. Guided by seven themes, this paper seeks to demonstrate the connection between Faith and the environment. In recent light of sexual harassment cases going unaddressed at Grand Canyon National Park and other public lands, there is a need to call out the persistent social, political, and economic structures that allow such acts to occur and go undocumented and unaddressed. The proposed action for the Boulevard Park Pedestrian Overpass is to remove the wooden structure and reroute the utilities underground. The utilities would be routed underneath the train tracks at the park entrance, connecting to Woods Coffee and up Bayview Drive. Irrigation and sewer will still be routed into the park but electricity, telecommunications and water will be routed out of the park. The utility conduits will be in separate trenches under the tracks. The park restrooms at the north end of the park will be abandoned to reduce utilities demands (especially water, electricity and sewer). Restrooms are still available …

Skagit County Parks and Recreation Department has acquired 255 acres of land with the help of Skagit Land Trust and private donors for the purpose of extending the Centennial Trail system, which is currently located throughout Snohomish County. The purpose of the acquisition of these land parcels is to 1) install a new water transmission pipeline from Judy Reservoir (a project done by Skagit Public Utility District) and 2) install a 2.5 mile walking trail on top of the pipeline extending from Clear Lake to Big Rock. The City of Bellingham (COB) is in phase I of the Cordata Community Park project. The community park will the newest park located within city limits. Phase I development will include amenities such as age separated playgrounds, picnic areas including a large picnic shelter, parkour, bike pump track, restrooms, parking and trails. Wetland mitigation efforts will be implemented for this project. Landscape planting, extension of utilities, security lighting, and irrigation will be included.

The Port of Bellingham (POB) has a court order with the Washington State Department of Ecology to address several cleanup sites within the Bellingham Waterfront District. The Aeration Stabilization Basin (ASB) is included in the Whatcom Waterway cleanup site due to contaminated sediments within the basin. The POB has plans to remediate the sediments and transform the entire ASB into a marina, but since that original proposal, demand for more boat slips has decreased. The POB is exploring alternative uses for the ASB site and what the environmental impacts of those uses would be.

West Horton Road currently dead-ends into a roundabout. The proposed action is to build an extension of road to connect the west terminus of West Horton Road to Aldrich Road to its west. The road extension would feature one traffic lane in each direction, one bike lane in each direction, and sidewalks on both sides.

As a community member, student, and educator within Bellingham’s food system I had hoped to contribute to the community's food education programming by developing and teaching an integrated food system curriculum. This project documents the development and repeated roadblocks to applying this curriculum. In response, I considered an alternative approach. Rather than trying to teach something novel as a relative newcomer and novice to an established community, why not learn from the existing network of food system educators. For my masters field project, I designed and ran a five-day week long summer program called Beach Investigators that teaches about the beach, and observing and investigating out surroundings. The Program aimed to provide 5th through 9th grade students with skill and internal motivation they could use to engage in more thoughtful and in-depth exploration of their local ecosystem. This program is based in Self Determination theory (SDT), which has the potential to aid in the aims and goals of EE. Seaside juniper (Juniperus maritima) is a recently discovered tree species endemic to the Salish Sea region and is an as yet unutilized dendrochronological resource. This study reports the first dendrochronological investigation of the species. We sought to determine if Seaside junipers are capable of crossdating, a requirement for consideration as a dendrochronology study species, and to identify correlations between instrumental climate records and radial growth to determine climate-growth response. We collected tree core samples from Seaside juniper in five sites throughout the San Juan Islands and nearby mainland. Samples collected from one of five sites successfully crossdated. Bootstrapped …

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnoses have been on the rise in children in the United States for the last twenty years due to multiple possible reasons (NIMH, 2016). Recent work on the subject, however, notes a positive correlation between exposure of children to experience-based nature therapy and the reduction of ADHD symptoms (Taylor & Kuo 2011). I hypothesized that implementing an intervention that is in an outdoor nature environment, that is experience-based and contains a learning objective would be correlated with a reduction of ADHD behaviors in elementary aged children. Whatcom County, Washington is currently under pressure to develop a water resource management plan to come into compliance with Washington State law, including recent legislation set forth in Engrossed Senate Substitute Bill (ESSB) 6091 (January 18,2018). ESSB 6091 requires Whatcom County to engage in a planning process to mitigate for water withdrawals for new permit-exempt wells and to ensure that new water users over a twenty-year period do not result in decreased ecological function of instream resources. Fragmented Ocean Acidification (OA) data and collaboration efforts between disciplines and stakeholders for the Salish Sea are barriers to a more effective transboundary ecosystem understanding and governance. While there are presently efforts to research and monitor OA, there is a significant gap of coordinated efforts throughout the entire Sea, especially around OA biological indicators.
