Accurate PET quantitation requires a matched attenuation map. Obtaining matched CT attenuation maps in the thorax is difficult due to the respiratory cycle which causes both motion and density changes. Unlike with motion, little attention has been given to the effects of density changes in the lung on PET quantitation. This work aims to explore the extent of the errors caused by pulmonary density attenuation map mismatch on dynamic and static parameter estimates. For agricultural and industrial activities, prediction of groundwater status is critical. As a main branch of neural network, shallow artificial neural network models have been deployed in prediction areas such as groundwater and rainfall since late 1980s. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) model within a newly proposed algorithm has been developed for groundwater status forecasting. Remote sensing of the earth with satellites yields datasets that can be massive in size, nonstationary in space, and non-Gaussian in distribution. To overcome computational challenges, we use the reduced-rank spatial random effects (SRE) model in a statistical analysis of cloud-mask data from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on board NASA's Terra satellite. Parameterisations of cloud processes are the biggest source of uncertainty and sensitivity in different climate models' future projections of Earth's climate. We study topological insulators, regarded as physical systems giving rise to topological invariants determined by symmetries both linear and anti-linear. Our perspective is that of non-commutative index theory of operator algebras. In particular, we formulate the index problems using Kasparov theory, both complex and real. We show that the periodic table of topological insulators and superconductors can be realized as a real or complex index pairing of a Kasparov module capturing internal symmetries of the Hamiltonian with a spectral triple encoding the geometry of the sample's (possibly non-commutative) Brillouin zone.

In this paper, a new approach is presented to reduce the nonlinear characteristics of a stressed power system by reducing its second-order modal interaction through retuning some parameters of the generator excitation system. In order to determine the second-order modal interaction of the system, a new index on nonlinearity is developed using normal form theory. Using the proposed index of nonlinearity, a sensitivity function is formed to indicate the most effective excitation system parameters in the nonlinear behavior of the system. This study investigates a method to predict the horizontal/vertical turbulence intensiities distribution in steady non-uniform flow. It deals with the deviation of these turbulence characteristics from the unifrom flow distribution. The empirical results show that the flow acceleration causes the deviation of turbulence intensities from the standard linear distrubtion. By connecting the flow acceleration with turbulence intensities, the study demonstrates empirically that the linear distrubtion of turbulence intensities can be observed when the flow acceleration is zero; the concave distribution of these characteristics can be observed when the flow acceleration is negative or when the flow velocity is decreased along …

We study the mean curvature flow of radially symmetric graphs with prescribed contact angle on a fixed, smooth hypersurface in Euclidean space. In this paper we treat two distinct problems. The first problem has a free Neumann boundary only, while the second has two disjoint boundaries, a free Neumann boundary and a fixed Dirichlet height. We separate the two problems and prove that under certain initial conditions we have either long time existence followed by convergence to a minimal surface, or finite maximal time of existence at the end of which the graphs develop a curvature singularity. There are two key types of selection in a plant breeding program, namely selection of hybrids for potential commercial use and the selection of parents for use in future breeding. Oakey et al. Several tests for cointegration among non-stationary financial time series have been developed including the Dicky Fuller (1979) unit root tests, the Cointegration Regression Durbin-Watson test (1983), the Wild Bootstrap test (2003) and the Johansen likelihood ratio tests (1988). The Johensen's tests appeared to provide superior results when the tests were originally applied to situations where the cointegration errors were normally distributed. However, substantial empirical evidences show that financial time series tend to be nonnormal in their distribution which may, in turn, lead to non-normal GARCH type cointegration error distributions. Previous studies have confirmed significant removal of various trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) by white-rot fungal cultures under sterile batch test conditions. However, little is known about TrOC removal in continuous flow fungal reactors in a non-sterile environment. In conventional steel-concrete-steel (SCS) construction, the external steel plates are connected to the concrete infill by welded shear stud connectors. This paper describes a programme of experimental and numerical investigations on reduced-scale non-composite SCS panels with axially restrained connections. The experimental results have demonstrated that the non-composite SCS panels are capable of developing enhanced load-carrying capacity through the tensile membrane resistance of the steel faceplates. This type of construction was found to exhibit highly ductile response and be able to sustain large end rotations of up to 18° without collapse. Optical spatial solitary waves are considered in a nonlocal thermal focusing medium with non-symmetric boundary conditions. The governing equations consist of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the light beam and a Poisson equation for the temperature of the medium. Three numerical methods are investigated for calculating the ground and excited solitary wave solutions of the coupled system. It is found that the Newton conjugate gradient method is the most computationally efficient and versatile numerical technique. A modified 150 mm Rowe cell equipped with pore water pressure measurement was used to capture the flow relationship during vacuum-assisted radial consolidation. Based on the measured data, a radial consolidation model incorporating the effects of vacuum preloading is proposed, based on a non-linear relationship between the flow velocity and hydraulic gradient. The predictions of the proposed consolidation model are then compared with the predictions based on Hansbo’s Darcian and non- Darcian models. One of the main advantages of the HHT is its ability to analyze non-stationary complex waveforms with very good time resolution. A high-performance protective structure utilising non-composite steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich panels for protecting buildings and facilities against close-range detonation of VBIEDs and heavy ve-hicle impacts has been developed. Unlike other existing composite sandwich panels, no shear connec-tors between the steel faceplates are utilised to construct protective panels in order to simplify the con-struction process. Kohonen's Self-Organizing Map is a popular method which allows the projection of high dimensional data onto a low dimensional display space. Models of Self-Organizing Maps for the treatment of graphs have also been defined and studied. This paper proposes an extension to the GraphSOM model which substantially improves the stability of the model, and, as a side effect, allows for an acceleration of training. The proposed extension is based on a soft encoding of the information needed to represent the vertices of an input graph. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed extension.

Suppose that H is a closed subgroup of a locally compact group G. We show that a unitary representation U of H is the restriction of a unitary representation of G if and only if a dual representation Û of a crossed product C*(G) (G/H) is regular in an appropriate sense. We then discuss the problem of deciding whether a given representation is regular; we believe that this problem will prove to be an interesting test question in non-Abelian duality for crossed products of C*-algebras.

The strong deviation in the properties of X-ray clusters from simple scaling laws highlights the importance of non-gravitational heating and cooling processes in the evolution of protocluster gas. We investigate this from two directions: by finding the amount of ‘excess energy’ required in intracluster gas in order to reproduce the observed X-ray cluster properties, and by studying the excess energies obtained from supernovae in a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Using the insights obtained from the model, we then critically discuss possible ways of achieving the high excess specific energies required in clusters.
