Ouachita Baptist University junior Morgan Taylor was named this year’s winner of the W. Francis and Mary McBeth Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition on Dec. 8. She performed Pequeña Czarda by Pedro Iturralde with pianist Susan Monroe.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Enactus team was named champion at its annual regional competition recently in Dallas, Texas. The team will compete May 21-23 at the Enactus National Exposition in Kansas City, Kan. The competition includes five leagues with seven teams each that compete against each other. The top four teams in each league move on to nationals. The teams prepare a script and video and select a team of students to present.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host its annual Virginia Queen Piano Competition Friday, May 5, at 3 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. This event is free and open to the public.

“The event was established nearly 40 years ago by Virginia Queen, a former Ouachita piano professor who just recently passed away.” said Dr. Lei Cai, professor of music at Ouachita. “She established the competition to encourage piano students to excel.”

Ouachita Baptist University’s student publications recently won 53 awards at the Arkansas College Media Association (AMCA) conference in Bentonville, Ark.

“It’s nice to see so many students honored for their work because it shows that it is a team effort when producing the publications for the university,” said Dr. Deborah Root, chair of Ouachita’s Rogers Department of Communications and sponsor of the Ouachitonian yearbook. “From writing to design to photography, it takes a strong staff of students to publish award-winning publications.”

Thirteen Ouachita Baptist University students were named finalists at the 2017 Arkansas National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) auditions held at Harding University. Among the finalists, five Ouachita students earned first place awards.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host the 19th annual Mary Shambarger Competition for Singers Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. This year’s competition features arias from opera and oratorio, and the performances are free and open to the public.
