Awareness of congruence and discrepancies within an individual’s pathway from career interest to occupational choice offers significant insight into the process of conciliation and foreclosure (i.e., psychological disposition toward a circumscription of career options). Given the significant role of careers, understanding the career developmental process is of particular importance. Career interests to occupational choice mediated by self-efficacy are key components in the process of attaining career related goals. Lent, Brown, and Hackett (1994) proposed in the social cognitive career theory (SCCT) that under optimal conditions, career interests give rise to congruent occupational choice goals. Potential uses for Facebook are frequently studied in scholarly literature. To date, much of this research focuses on varied social uses available to Facebook members. More recently, scholars have turned to potential academic uses of Facebook, and more generally, how Facebook might be used in educational institutions such as colleges and universities. This study tracked records on 142,755 students attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during the period Fall 1988 through Fall 2000. Student files were used to construct a longitudinal database tracking semester experiences, graduate information, and demographic data and matched against January 2000 Wisconsin Department of Transportation driver’s license data and Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development data on all employer-reported wages for Wisconsin companies, nonprofits, and government agencies. Most Wisconsin high school graduates attending and graduating from UWM with a bachelor’s degree continue to live and work in Wisconsin.
