La Educación Superior Transnacional En México: El Caso Sylvan-Universidad Del Valle De México, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez
Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez
This paper discusses the impact of transnationalisation on Mexican higher education system in four steps: First, it examines the Mexican government position about the global international trade. Second, it exposes the general Mexican position about the educative transnationalisation. Third, it refers the Mexican legal frame about direct foreign investment in education. Fourth, it displays data about the volume of direct foreign investment in the Mexican educative sector.

Being The Change I Want To See In The World: Learning And Teaching From The Heart, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
The author draws on her professional practice as an educator/academic in a UK higher education institution to share her journey, as an African British woman, of becoming the change she wants to see in the world. She shares the process of the radical appropriation of her own unique and creative spiritual ‘I’ and the challenges she is presented with of identifying her particular path of meaning and purpose; of transcending the social construction of black and white identities; of definitive movement towards self realisation and spiritual freedom. The central thrust of the paper is the emphasis on how every individual …

Obituary Thakor Shah By Amar Jesani & Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Obituary Thakor Shah By Amar Jesani & Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
At a time when the nation needs people who could keep alive the secular conscience of Gujarat, the passing away of Thakor Shah on April 10, 2004 in Vadodara due to massive heart attack has come as a big jolt. He died while participating in the meeting of the network of social movements in Gujarat. Of the 76 years he lived, he spent over 60 years in public life, making personal sacrifices, fearlessly withstanding all attacks – physical and political – in his incessant struggle for organising working masses for their rights and justice. His life was a political journey …

The Role Of Universities In Preparing The Next Generation Of Infrastructure Professionals, George H. Baker
The Role Of Universities In Preparing The Next Generation Of Infrastructure Professionals, George H. Baker
George H Baker
Universities need to play a central role in infrastructure assurance but have not realized their full potential. While the first role of Universities is education, their role in infrastructure assurance does not stop there. University infrastructure assurance programs should embrace research, policy studies, public awareness, development and promulgation of best practices, and real-time/real-problem assistance to public and private infrastructure stakeholders.

Essentials Of Language Testing For Malaysian Teachers, Arshad Abd Samad
Arshad Abd Samad
This is a chapter from a book on language testing that was written to address the need to use tests to not only measure language output or product alone but also to utilize tests as an impetus to language learning. This book is intended as a bridge between the more traditional concepts of testing and measurement in teaching English as a Second Language to one that is more contemporary and compatible with modern views of language learning and education.

How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Michael H.G. Hoffmann
Discussions concerning belief revision, theory development, and "creativity" in philosophy and AI, reveal a growing interest in Peirce's concept of abduction. Peirce introduced abduction in an attempt to provide theoretical dignity and clarification to the difficult problem of knowledge generation. He wrote that "An Abduction is Originary in respect to being the only kind of argument which starts a new idea." These discussions, however, have led to considerable debates about the precise way in which Peirce's abduction can be used to explain knowledge generation. The crucial question is that of understanding how we can get the new elements capable of …

Learning By Developing Knowledge Networks. A Semiotic Approach Within A Dialectical Framework, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Wolf-Michael Roth
Michael H.G. Hoffmann
A central challenge for research on how we should prepare students to manage crossing boundaries between different knowledge settings in life long learning processes is to identify those forms of knowledge that are particularly relevant here. In this paper, we develop by philosophical means the concept of a dialectical system as a general framework to describe the development of knowledge networks that mark the starting point for learning processes, and we use semiotics to discuss (a) the epistemological thesis that any cognitive access to our world of objects is mediated by signs and (b) diagrammatic reasoning and abduction as those …

Using Tutorials In The Development Of Economics And Management Thinking Skills, Bryane Michael
Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)
One of the primary goals of educating in economics and management (E&M) is to teach students to think for themselves rather than repeat text-book theories. Drawing upon my own teaching experiences, I will discuss a framework for tutorial-based teaching of applied E&M thinking. The paper discusses results to date from the use of this framework as well as lessons learned which might be applicable to a range of University and non-University based programmes teaching skills in economics and management.

This paper discusses the need for university libraries in Nigeria to support cyber-education or cyberscience. There is the move from the traditional print-based system to the automated system of library services. Most recently, the birth of digital environments has led to the introduction of virtual libraries and online services which enhance the output of libraries andmeet the demands of users in places where they have been adopted. This paper encourages the support of cyber-science or cyber-education in Nigerian university libraries as a way to meet the changing needs of university communities. It highlights the transitions from the old to the …

"Africa-U.S. Partnership In The 21st Century,", Amadu Jacky Kaba
Amadu Jacky Kaba
This article explores the new partnership between the United States and Africa in the beginning of the 21st century. It examines the types of political, economic and social endeavors that the two entities have undertaken and promise to undertake in the years and decades to come. It also shows that this new policy of the United States towards Africa goes beyond political parties (Democrats and Republicans), which is why many people across the world have been surprised to see a Republican president and government showing support for these new ties with Africa. I will briefly highlight some of the developments …

"Africa’S Migration Brain Drain: The Costs And Benefits To The Continent,", Amadu Jacky Kaba
Amadu Jacky Kaba
The beginning of the twenty-first century is witnessing two major problems confronting the continent of Africa. They are the massive migration to the West by the educated and economic elites of the continent and the massive deaths of Africans in countries or parts of the continent where not only high proportions of people can at least read and write, but they also have stronger economies. The first problem is that, since the 1990s, hundreds of thousands or more of educated Africans have emigrated to Western Europe, North America and other parts of the developed world seeking better paying jobs, leaving …
