Empowering Youth Through Social Justice: A Mixed Methods Case Study Of The Deaf Community Travel Trunk Project, Emma Halliburton, Lisa Moore

As part of my honors requirement in my d/Deaf Education program, I crafted a Travel Trunk for humane education focusing on the area of social justice. Within that, due to my own personal connections, I elected for my Travel Trunk to center the Deaf Community. Using the book Listen, which details Evelyn Glennie's achievements, the project aimed to instill empathy. Students engaged with Glennie's story through a YouTube video and hands-on percussion activities, including wearing noise-canceling headphones. The research included pre- and post-surveys in an elementary classroom, assessing perceptions of deaf individuals as well as a field observation protocol. Utilizing …

There is a significant gap in the knowledge in regard to the impact of parental tough love on adolescents. Heteronormativity is the belief that people fall into distinct and complementary genders with natural roles in life. The idea is that the culture within elementary schools influences the children’s academic, behavioral, and psychological well-being. During this period of a child’s life, heteronormativity develops. The purpose of this research is to gain a greater understanding of the prevalence of heteronormativity in elementary school classrooms, specifically kindergarten. To understand this process, I will systematically observe classrooms within kindergarten. Poverty is an epidemic that is affecting millions of students in the United States. This literature review reports on issues pertaining to middle level students and how these students are affected by poverty. We examined 10 resources, including education books and empirical articles in academic journals, to report on findings and make recommendations for middle level educators about how to improve a child’s chances of rising above poverty.
