Assessments of the relationship among law, innovation, and economic growth often begin with one or more propositions of law or law practice and predict how changes might affect innovation or business practice. This approach is problematic when applied to questions of regional economic development, because historic and contemporary local conditions vary considerably. This paper takes a different tack. It takes a snapshot of one recovering post-industrial economy, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. For most of the 20th century, Pittsburgh's steelmakers were leading examples worldwide of American economic prowess. Pittsburgh was so vibrant with industry that a late 19th century travel writer …

Resource Wealth And Entrepreneurship: A Blessing Or A Curse?, Mohammad Reza Farzanegan
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Reza Farzanegan
Resource-rich countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) have the highest youth unemployment rate in the world. While other parts of the world are experiencing an increasing trend in new firms’ formation as a potential solution for their unemployment problem, the MENA region has the lowest records in new business establishments. In this study, we investigate the reasons behind such a significant lag of the resource-rich countries in entrepreneurship. The decline is more significant in countries with higher levels …

This paper studies the impact of adolescent work experience on adult self-employment. Using a novel data source, I find that respondents who run their own businesses as adolescents are three times more likely to be self-employed as an adult. This effect is strongest among children with self-employed parents: the impact of adolescent self-employment on adult self-employment is around seven times higher for the offspring of self-employed parents than for those who have wage-earning parents. These findings suggests that adolescent self-employment is a channel that transmits human capital from parents to children, thereby influencing the child's adult-life vocational choice.
