Twin Deficits Or Distant Cousins? Evidence From India, Artatrana Ratha
Twin Deficits Or Distant Cousins? Evidence From India, Artatrana Ratha
Economics Faculty Working Papers
The twin-deficits theory has intrigued economists and policy-makers alike for the past few decades. In a Keynesian economy, budget deficit increases the absorption of the economy, causes import expansions, and thereby, worsens the trade deficit. It also causes domestic interest rates to rise, domestic currency to appreciate, and thereby, contributes to trade deficits. However, according to the Ricardian Equivalence Hypothesis (REH), rising budget deficits implies higher future tax-liabilities so people would save more and consume less. As a result, an inter-temporal shift between taxes and budget deficits would have no impact on the real interest, or the trade deficit. Thus, …

Fiscal And Monetary Institutions And Policies: Onward And Upward?, King Banaian, Richard C.K. Burdekin, Mark Hallerberg, Pierre L. Siklos

The latest generation of research into macroeconomic policy has turned from more technical aspects of optimal control and expectations formation to consideration of the policymaking institutions themselves. More and more countries have moved towards greater degrees of central bank independence, including many developing economies as well the member countries of the European Central Bank. What still is not generally settled among economists is how to measure the stance of policy and the institutional features of the policymaking process. Our review encompasses many different measurements of policy stance and policymaking processes. We begin with monetary policy in the following section after …
Does It Matter Who I Work For And Who I Work With? The Impact Of Owners And Coworkers Birthplace And Race On Hiring And Wages, Monica Garcia-Perez
Does It Matter Who I Work For And Who I Work With? The Impact Of Owners And Coworkers Birthplace And Race On Hiring And Wages, Monica Garcia-Perez
Economics Faculty Working Papers
This paper investigates the effect of firm owners and coworkers on hiring patterns and wages. Firstly, I explore the potential mechanisms generating their interrelation. Using a search model where social networks reduce search frictions, I develop the theoretical implications of social ties between owners and workers for individual labor market outcomes. In the model, wages are derived endogenously as a function of the efficiency of the social ties of current employees. Firms decide whether to fill their vacancies by posting their offers or by using their current workers’ connections. As a result, individuals with a more efficient connection tend to …
Workplace Concentration Of Immigrants, Monica Garcia-Perez
Workplace Concentration Of Immigrants, Monica Garcia-Perez
Economics Faculty Working Papers
To what extent do immigrants and the native-born work in separate workplaces? Do worker and employer characteristics explain the degree of workplace concentration? We explore these questions using a matched employer-employee database that extensively covers employers in selected MSAs. We find that immigrants are much more likely to have immigrant coworkers than are natives, and are particularly likely to work with their compatriots. We find much higher levels of concentration for small businesses than for large ones, that concentration varies substantially across industries, and that concentration is particularly high among immigrants with limited English skills. We also find evidence that …
