When Does Legal Origin Matter?, Mohammad Amin, Priya Ranjan

This paper takes another look at the extent of business regulation in civil law versus common law countries. In contrast to existing studies that find a heavier role of government in the civil law countries, we show that this holds only for a subset of civil and common law countries that have well developed political institutions but not otherwise. In short, it is the interaction between legal origin and the quality of political institutions and not legal origin alone that can explain differences in the level of regulation across countries. For example, focusing on entry regulations, our results show that …

Can The Threat Of Entry Reduce Competition?, Joshua S. Gans, Martin C. Byford
Joshua S Gans
This paper is the first to provide a general context whereby potential entry can permanently reduce the intensity of competition in a market. All previous results found that potential entry would lead to lower prices and greater competition. Examining markets where entry occurs by the acquisition of access rights from existing incumbents, we demonstrate that, when competitive choices are strategic complements, a more efficient entrant may be unable to acquire those rights from a less efficient incumbent due to the accommodating behavior of efficient incumbents. Similarly, such accommodating behavior may deter efficient investment by an incumbent or mergers that would …

Social Norm, Social Capital And The Sustainability Of Small Scale Economies, Ram Ranjan
Social Norm, Social Capital And The Sustainability Of Small Scale Economies, Ram Ranjan
Ram Ranjan
Social capital and social norms in agrarian settings encourage farmers to come together and sustainably manage their scarce common property resources, such as water. The role of social norms is crucial towards determining whether or not farmers are able to overcome the temptations of the market that place emphasis on immediate higher benefits at the cost of future sustainability and the risk of getting marginalized in a rural community. The capability to collectively co-manage resources is dependent upon the ability of the community to penalize the defectors. In this paper, the extent of punishment required to deter defection is derived …

Maternal Smoking, Misclassification, And Infant Health, Tanguy Brachet
Maternal Smoking, Misclassification, And Infant Health, Tanguy Brachet
Tanguy Brachet
Identifying the causal effect of prenatal maternal smoking on infant health is complicated by unobservable maternal characteristics and behaviors which are plausibly related to both birth outcomes and a mother’s propensity to smoke. Previous studies have addressed the omitted variables problem using instrumental variables (IV) techniques. However, with self-reported data on maternal smoking, misreporting can induce more severe biases in IV estimates than in OLS. This paper proposes an approach based on parametric methods for misclassified binary dependent variables that simultaneously addresses the endogeneity and measurement error problems. The relationship between infant health and maternal smoking is then re-examined using …
Investing In A Better Job, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Investing In A Better Job, Michael Sack Elmaleh
Michael Sack Elmaleh
Investing time and money to attain "something" that allows a person to earn more in future wages is economically rational, if the present value of the additional future wages exceeds the present value of the investment cost in time and money to attain that "something". In our market economy, these attained "somethings" include college degrees, vocational and professional certifications, and equity ownership in small closely held businesses. Most small closely held businesses require the full time active management of the owner. Little or no free cash flow would be available to the investor if they chose to hire a non …
Entry Costs And Economies Of Scope In Multiproduct Firms' Decisions, Xosé-Luís Varela-Irimia
Entry Costs And Economies Of Scope In Multiproduct Firms' Decisions, Xosé-Luís Varela-Irimia
Xosé-Luís Varela-Irimia
This paper computes the scope economies associated to the commercialization of several product varieties by multiproduct firms, in a dynamic oligopoly setting. Goods are differentiated and firms decide on firm entry and exit, product entry and exit, quality and pricing. The model is applied to the Spanish automobile market. Results show moderate entry costs and substantial cost reductions when introducing a second product as compared to the first, indicating that multiproduct firms benefit from strong economies of scope when expanding their range of products. However, those economies disappear after five products have been introduced, suggesting a U-shaped curve for entry …
Tivoed: The Effects Of Ad-Avoidance Technologies On Broadcaster Behaviour, Joshua S. Gans, Simon P. Anderson
Tivoed: The Effects Of Ad-Avoidance Technologies On Broadcaster Behaviour, Joshua S. Gans, Simon P. Anderson
Joshua S Gans
The business model of commercial (free-to-air) television relies on advertisers to pay for programming. Viewers ‘inadvertently’ watch advertisements that are bundled with programming. Advertisers have no reason to pay to have their ads embedded if the viewers succeed in unbundling the advertisements from the entertainment content (advertising bypass). TiVo (Digital Video Recorder) machines, remote controls, and pop-up ad blockers are all examples of ad-avoidance technologies whose deployment detracts from the willingness to pay of advertisers for audience since a smaller audience is actually exposed to the ads. However, viewer purchases of devices to avoid ads may cause a disproportionate share …

Water Borne Diseases And Rural Development In Sudan Study Of Malaria In Gezira Irrigated Agricultural Scheme, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed
Water Borne Diseases And Rural Development In Sudan Study Of Malaria In Gezira Irrigated Agricultural Scheme, Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed
Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed
Gezira irrigated scheme is globally one of the biggest agricultural productive units administratively managed. It has seen deteriorating productivity for the past two decades. There cries that it should be privatized. That was seriously taken by the government in an economic liquidation of its assets. However, in this study we discuss analyze other aspects than the previously mentioned aspects of production parameters. We focus of health economics and how gradual negligence led to the prevalence of waterborne diseases. That degenerated farmers' abilities to produce. The present study was carried out in the Gezira scheme to measure the impact of water …
Bailing Out The World's Poorest, Martin Ravallion
Bailing Out The World's Poorest, Martin Ravallion
Martin Ravallion
While the 2008 financial crisis is global in nature, it is likely to have heterogeneous welfare impacts within the developing world, with some countries, and some people, more vulnerable than others. It also threatens to have lasting impacts for some of those affected, notably through the nutrition and schooling of children in poor families. These features point to the need for a differentiated social policy response, aiming to provide rapid income support to those in most need, while preserving the key physical and human assets of poor people and their communities. The paper points out some mistakes in past crisis …
Determinants Of Historic And Cultural Landmark Designation: Why We Preserve What We Preserve, Douglas S. Noonan, Douglas J. Krupka
Determinants Of Historic And Cultural Landmark Designation: Why We Preserve What We Preserve, Douglas S. Noonan, Douglas J. Krupka
Douglas S. Noonan
There is much interest among cultural economists in assessing the effects of heritage preservation policies. There has been less interest in modeling the policy choices made in historic and cultural landmark preservation. This paper builds an economic model of a landmark designation that highlights the tensions between the interests of owners of cultural amenities and the interests of the neighboring community. We perform empirical tests by estimating a discrete choice model for landmark preservation using data from Chicago, combining the Chicago Historical Resources Survey of over 17,000 historic structures with property sales, Census, and other geographic data. The data allow …

Auctions For Injecting Bank Capital (Addendum To 'A Troubled Asset Reverse Auction'), Peter Cramton, Lawrence M. Ausubel
Peter Cramton
Public discussion has turned, in the past few days, toward using some of the $700 billion in rescue funds for the injection of government money into banks in return for ownership stakes. The purpose of this short note, an addendum to “A Troubled Asset Reverse Auction,” is to describe an auction mechanism suitable for injections of capital into banks. The auctions would price the equity purchases through a competitive process.
Luxury Markets, Antitrust, And Intellectual Property: An Introduction, Ben Kleinman-Green
Luxury Markets, Antitrust, And Intellectual Property: An Introduction, Ben Kleinman-Green
Ben Kleinman-Green
In this paper I look at markets for luxury goods and begin exploring the interplay among trademark law, antitrust law, luxury goods, and copies of luxuries. In the absence of empirical data and economic theories directly on point, I informally extend a model of luxury markets to account for copies of luxury goods and then look to trademark law cases for indications of how courts might evaluate luxury markets in an antitrust context.
