Employee Satisfaction And Stock Performance, Michael Snyder Jan 2020

Employee Satisfaction And Stock Performance, Michael Snyder

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study aims to explore the previously documented relationship between employee satisfaction and superior stock returns. Previous research suggests that firms with higher employee satisfaction also deliver superior stock returns. Furthermore, previous research has established a logical connection from employee satisfaction to superior stock performance. This study constructed an equally-weighted portfolio of the publicly traded companies on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. This performance was compared to the performance of the S&P 500 on a total return basis for the calendar years 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. The study also collected fundamental data related to each …

Do Socially Conscious Etfs Match Their Active Counterparts?, Ryan Cultice

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Over the past decade, Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) has grown at a rapid pace and, by some estimates, now represents a quarter of the $48 trillion in assets under professional management in the United States. At the same time, investors have broadly shifted from active to passive investing strategies. While there is significant research in each of these respective areas, we believe that we are the first to examine whether a socially conscious investor can employ a passive approach or if the constrained nature of SRI necessitates active management. As such, we examine the performance of socially conscious ETFs versus …

If You're Not Cheating, You're Not Trying: An Economic Analysis Of The Financial Futility Of Ncaa Sanctions, Travis Freytag

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The front page of sports news for the past few years has been filled with a cycle of recruiting and academic scandals from universities all over the country. Despite the repercussions that schools face from the NCAA for cheating, they continue to break the rules to obtain the top high school recruits in men’s basketball and football. Why has this become the common culture across college sports? In this study, we used data from a variety of sources, including the NCAA Legislative Database and the US Department of Education, to estimate the relationship between a university’s athletics revenue and the …

Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting Of Confederate Currency And The Impact It Had On Inflation, Raymond Rector

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis, "Northern Entrepreneur's Counterfeiting of Confederate Currency and The Impact It Had On Inflation" takes an in depth look at the history of counterfeiting the currency of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War by entrepreneurs who saw the introduction of a new currency as an opportunity to profit. The thesis begins by providing background information on several major counterfeiters and their actions before and during the Civil War, as well as other sources of counterfeit bills not normally considered by scholars. The thesis also looks at the effects that this illegitimate increase in the money supply …

The New American Revolution: Economic Inequality And Economic Democracy, Alec Stubbs Jan 2016

The New American Revolution: Economic Inequality And Economic Democracy, Alec Stubbs

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This work explores the disastrous effects of the modern capitalist system and how it creates, as well as perpetuates, the negative impacts of a vastly unequal system. Beginning with how inequality manifests itself and why we should care, this work analyzes the damages, dangers, and destruction of economic inequality. These insights help to reveal two key aspects of the failing capitalist system: the lie of real political democracy and the lack of economic democracy. At the root cause of these issues is an unstable capitalism that cannot simply be quelled by taxation, regulation, and reconfiguration. Instead, I contend that what …

Effects Of Fiscal Policy On Consumer Confidence, Sara Omohundro Jan 2016

Effects Of Fiscal Policy On Consumer Confidence, Sara Omohundro

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

It has long been debated which type of fiscal policy is most effective in a recession, a tax cut or an increase in government spending. Throughout the history of the United States, many administrations have tried to implement various forms and combinations of tax cuts and spending hikes to jump start the economy. Some were effective, and some were not. By determining what it is that makes fiscal policy effective, the government can be better prepared and more informed when designing fiscal policy in the future. Consumer confidence is one relevant metric for this analysis because it is sensitive to …

When You Need More Than Just An Apple A Day: A Review Of The Empirical Evidence Relating To Disparities In Access To Health Care And A Preliminary Perspective On The Effects Of The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Alexis Coulis

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The concept of medical care is twofold, made up of both prevention and treatment. Prevention itself consists of three distinct levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary prevention includes actions protecting healthy people from developing a disease in the first place. Secondary goes on to refer to management of a diagnosed condition that works to keep symptoms at a minimum. Finally, tertiary prevention encompasses measures taken in an attempt to control an existing disease. Three individual case studies – the influenza vaccine, asthma management, and control of congestive heart failure – exemplify these primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive measures. Together, they …

The Grant Equivalent Of Foreign Aid Commitments: People's Republic Of China 1956-1974, Hans F. Haupt

Graduate Thesis Collection

The purpose of this thesis is to show the existing quantitative tool (model) measuring the true grant-value of foreign aid, expand that model somewhat to arrive at least at reasonably accurate input factors which are otherwise difficult to evaluate, and to document China's foreign aid program on a recipient by recipient basis, both in terms of its nature and its estimated grant-components.

Regulation And Competition In The Motor Transportation Industry, Richard F. Hoogerwerf Jan 1977

Regulation And Competition In The Motor Transportation Industry, Richard F. Hoogerwerf

Graduate Thesis Collection

Evidence exists today which indicates that our present motor carrier regulatory system, rather than "protect the public interest", might actually inhibit the efficient provision of transportation services to the economy. Accepting such a view of the regulated motor transport market as valid, this thesis could serve as a model from which legislators might begin to re-write our motor carrier act. It is assumed throughout this work that such an undertaking is well overdue. The possible use of this thesis for such a purpose is its primary justification for existence.

In order to serve as a basis for such a legislative …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Urban Concentration And Occupational Structure On Wage Differentials Between Women And Men In Selected Geographic Divisions Of The United States, Susan Stickler Hession-Eaton Aug 1973

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Urban Concentration And Occupational Structure On Wage Differentials Between Women And Men In Selected Geographic Divisions Of The United States, Susan Stickler Hession-Eaton

Graduate Thesis Collection

When attempting to explain the economics of occupational structure, income servies as the apex of discrimination. Women earn only 60% of what men earn. This statistic does not offend enough people since efforts to change the situation have provided only further resistance by women and men for improvement in the earnings split. Women tend to receive lower wage and salary earnings than men because of differences in types of jobs held, job training and continuity of work experience. Large numbers of women work in traditionally low-paying occupations and low-wage industries. Women tend to respond to their cultural up-bringing. My hypothesis …

An Econometric Model For Forecasting Industrial Electrical Sales For Indiana, Ronald E. Clarke Jul 1972

An Econometric Model For Forecasting Industrial Electrical Sales For Indiana, Ronald E. Clarke

Graduate Thesis Collection

Projections of electrical energy sales constitutes the foundation for planning in the electric utility industry. Every distributor of electric energy, large or small, wholesaler or retailer, should have sales forecasts available upon which to base its physical and financial planning. Others associated with the industry, such as regulatory agencies and suppliers, also need such forecasts.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an econometric model for forecasting annual industrial kilowatt-hour sales for the State of Indiana. The model is designated so that State agencies, suppliers and individual companies can use the model.

A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell Feb 1972

A Study Of The Relationship Between Unemployment In Indiana And The United States, Jack W. Bell

Graduate Thesis Collection

Each state or region within the United States has certain unique and distinct characteristics that cause its economic performance to vary from that of the nation as a whole. Unemployment rates, as summary measures of unutilized manpower resources, frequently serve as a gauge of the general economic situation and social well-being. It is a well documented fact that unemployment is not evenly distributed througout the nation. For example, although 54% of the labor force is concetrated in the northeast and north central regions, they only account for 46% of the unemployment in recent years. This thesis focuses on the measurement …

Concentration In Primary Products And Terms Of Trade, Ronald C. Gaughf Jul 1971

Concentration In Primary Products And Terms Of Trade, Ronald C. Gaughf

Graduate Thesis Collection

It is generally accepted that the less developed nations have suffered a long run deterioration of their terms of trade, which represents an indirect transfer of income to the developed nations.1 If true, the gains from international trade are being unequally distributed and the less developed nations have a legitimate complaint. They are very concerned about their terms of trade on the international scene because their trade gains provide for skills required for modernization. Raul Prebisch2 cited the Latin American nations as a classic example in the deterioration of the terms of trade. Most of these nations export heavily in …

The Grant Component In United States Economic Aid To Less-Developed Countries, Carl J. Gahwiler May 1971

The Grant Component In United States Economic Aid To Less-Developed Countries, Carl J. Gahwiler

Graduate Thesis Collection

Foreing aid, since its comparatively recent inception, continually has been the subject of polemics. Though volumes have been written concerning its rationale, implementation, burden, impact, etc., only recently, with the concept of grants economics, have asessments of economic aid on a quantitative subsify basis been possible. These pioneering efforts have led the way toward a clearer understanding of foreign aid by identifying the real transfers involved.

The object of the following analysis is to ferret out the grant component of official United States economic aid to less-developed countries from 1953 to 1969. The United States is chosen due to availabiity …
