An Analysis Of Some Effects Of China's Foreign Trade On Its Economy, Wei Jiang May 1987

An Analysis Of Some Effects Of China's Foreign Trade On Its Economy, Wei Jiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The central planning board in China issues orders to each economic agent mainly through two channels, ministries and provinces. These orders become the targets for every specific economic agent. The orders to the Foreign Trade Ministry become the targets for all import and export corporations, provincial foreign trade bureaus, and branch corporations. The activities of all branch corporations comprise China's foreign trade business.

The activities of the foreign trade sector are certainly influenced by features of the entire economy such as the domestic fixed-price system and labor immobility. These factors not only constrain foreign trade activities but also cause inefficiency …

Study Of America's Adopt-A-Horse (Or Burro) Program, Peter A. Lawson May 1987

Study Of America's Adopt-A-Horse (Or Burro) Program, Peter A. Lawson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study analyzes aspects of Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro adoptions. After primary data are gathered by a questionnaire sent to wild horse and burro adopters, various statistics, and regression test results are reported, which indicate that the demand for the wild horses is multifaceted and that the wild animals are not a homogeneous product. The results overwhelmingly indicate that young and female horses are preferred by the majority of adopters. This finding had supportive evidence in both a price determination model as well as adopters' responses to the survey that was conducted as a part of this study. …

Measuring Natural Resource Scarcity Under Common Property Environment And Uncertainty: An Interpretive Analysis, Soumendra N. Ghosh May 1987

Measuring Natural Resource Scarcity Under Common Property Environment And Uncertainty: An Interpretive Analysis, Soumendra N. Ghosh

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The issue of natural resource scarcity has so far been addressed in the literature on the basis of various measures such as the unit cost of production, the relative market price, and the shadow price of a resource. Although it has been recognized that there exists some kind of jointness (sometimes inseparable) between an extractible resource and its surrounding environment, none of the measures, either theoretically or empirically, have included this concern.

In order to extract and use a natural resource (e.g., coal) the environment (air, water, etc.) must also be used as a repository of the discharged wastes (e.g., …

Devaluation, Short-Run Supply Response, And The J-Curve, Alexander L. Brown Jan 1987

Devaluation, Short-Run Supply Response, And The J-Curve, Alexander L. Brown

Honors Papers

This paper will attempt to empirically illustrate the contribution of short-run supply adjustment to the U.S. J-curve. I plan to study, on the major industry division level (2 digit SIC), 15 manufacturing sectors of the united states. Their supply movements will be calculated in terms of total short-run adjustment. These statistics will then be compared to the trade balance (J-curve) for the U.S. to see if the supply movements of U.S. manufacturers can explain the continued drop in U.S. international trade. If the theory is supported few industries will adjust quickly in the short-run, reflecting the slow adjustment of aggregate …

The Presidential Business Cycle In The U.S.: A Theoretical And Empirical Examination, Ranjit S. Dighe Jan 1987

The Presidential Business Cycle In The U.S.: A Theoretical And Empirical Examination, Ranjit S. Dighe

Honors Papers

The idea of a politically-motivated business cycle is basically a conspiracy theory: "office-motivated" politicians, seeking to exploit the well-documented relationship between favorable economic news and votes for the incumbent president and his party, manipulate the timing of business cycles for their own electoral gain. This manipulation, theorists maintain, is effected through the use of any of several policy instruments including discretionary federal spending, government transfer payments, and the average tax rate, as well as pressure on the central bank to pursue a more accommodating monetary policy.

Theories of such a cycle seem to fall in and out of favor with …

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Airline Deregulation Upon The Demand For Intercity Bus Service, Daniel G. Greenberg Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Airline Deregulation Upon The Demand For Intercity Bus Service, Daniel G. Greenberg

Honors Papers

This brief excerpt, although not particularly fascinating in its revelation, is exemplary of a far more complex aspect of modern American economic policy. During the 1930's, American regulatory fervor was at its peak. Fear of a repeated economic upheaval, like that of 1929, compounded with the exorbitant profits earned by the robber barons spawned government intervention. Consequently, regulation was imposed upon numerous industries, including air and bus transport.

Four decades later restrictions have been lifted not only in the airline industry but in the intercity bus industry as well. These changes are part of the new laissez faire govermnent of …

The Sensitivity Of Brazil's Balance Of Payments And Foreign Debt To Future Changes In World Economic Conditions: 1987-1991, David Rostov Jan 1987

The Sensitivity Of Brazil's Balance Of Payments And Foreign Debt To Future Changes In World Economic Conditions: 1987-1991, David Rostov

Honors Papers

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the sensitivity of Brazil's balance of payments (including its foreign debt) to future changes in world economic conditions. To accomplish this, the determinants of the country's balance of payments will be isolated and then empirically studied. Based upon these results, forecasts will be made under three different economic scenarios. The intent will be to determine the affect that different sets of world conditions have upon Brazil's foreign debt and trade balance from 1987 to 1991.

The hypothesis of this study is that continued industrial country growth, coupled with low world interest rates, will …

German-Czech Conflict In Cisleithania : The Question Of The Ethnographic Partition Of Bohemia, 1848-1919, Nicholas Aldorde Jan 1987

German-Czech Conflict In Cisleithania : The Question Of The Ethnographic Partition Of Bohemia, 1848-1919, Nicholas Aldorde

Dissertations and Theses

Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the former Crownlands of Austria-Hungary which now make up the western half of Czechoslovakia, had for centuries a population mixture of 40% German, 60% Czech. The national reawakening of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries pitted the majority Czechs against their German minority master. This, coupled with the social upheavals caused by the industrial revolution, brought Czechs and Germans in Bohemia to center stage in the nationality conflict in the multinational Empire.

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada Jan 1987

Social Security, Savings, And Labor Supply Of The Elderly In Japan, Tetsuji Yamada

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The study examines the controversial, inconsistent empirical results of the effect of social security on personal savings and analyzes the interdependency in the context of social security between the personal savings and labor supply behavior of elderly workers.

Very few studies in this field have been done, and it has not theoretically and empirically been accomplished yet in Japan. Time-series data are used for 1946-1982, and the methods of technique are ordinary least squares and a simultaneous-equation model in the life cycle framework.

The study finds that social security affects personal savings and that the benefit effect dominates the retirement …
