Murray Weidenbaum Publications
Seemingly in order to demonstrate its concern with huge trade deficits, Congress passed the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988. This report examines the impact of the new trade law on a multitude of government agencies.
The American Economy: Is A Turning Point At Hand?, Murray L. Weidenbaum
The American Economy: Is A Turning Point At Hand?, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
American businesses are making adjustments to the global marketplace. Politically, the big question is whether or not the Cold War is finally ending. Can the United States successfully shift key resources to the civilian economy? Will the lower military demand lead to a worldwide recession or will it free up resources for a period of stronger growth? There are signs of a potential slowdown in the short term. In the long term, open markets seem to be prevailing, with three dominant clusters emerging: Europe, U.S./Canada, and the Pacific rim.

The Case Against Another Business-Government Partnership, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
This policy paper examines the myths surrounding business-government partnerships or federal bailouts. It also provides some insights into what does work in their place. [Introduction To] The Medical Offset Effect And Public Health Policy: Mental Health Industry In Transition, Jonathan B. Wight, John L. Fiedler
Bookshelf
Does the timely treatment of mental illness result in a drop in the cost of health care, and if so, what is the cost effectiveness? This study provides an overview, synthesis, and analysis of the medical offset effect. It demonstrates that a medical offset effect does exist and the size of the effect is significant. A behavioral model provides a precise method for ascertaining the dimensions of medical offset and an explanation of the underlying causal relationships. The offset effect for an important population group is analyzed through the use of Medicaid patient data from Georgia and Michigan. This clear, …

The Allure Of Value-Added Taxes: Examining The Pros And Cons, Murray L. Weidenbaum, Ernest S. Christian Jr
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
Compared to most other developed Western nations, the United States relies far less heavily on consumption-based taxes. In practice, much of the impact of shifting to a higher consumption tax would depend on how the tax is structured. The two major policy alternatives are an expenditures tax levied on total purchases within an accounting period or a value-added tax collected on each purchase.
