Essays On Parental Leave And Family Labour Supply, Youjin Choi
Essays On Parental Leave And Family Labour Supply, Youjin Choi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis studies married couples' decisions regarding labour supply, fertility, and take-up of parental leave. Importantly, it emphasizes household interactions in a family labour supply framework where husbands and wives jointly make decisions.
In Chapter 2, I describe how differences in married individuals' time allocations between Canada and the U.S. may be related to different parental leave policies in the two countries. First, I document background information on parental leave policies and take-up behaviour in the two countries. Second, I analyze married individuals' time allocations using data from the General Social Survey (GSS) for Canada and American Time Use Survey …

My thesis consists of three chapters that are motivated by policy-relevance and contribute to the study of crime choices among young individuals.
Chapter 2 studies the determinants of youth crime using a dynamic discrete choice model of crime and education. We allow past education and criminal activities to affect current crime and educational decisions. We take advantage of a rich panel dataset on serious juvenile offenders, the Pathways to Desistance. Using a series of psychometric tests, we estimate a model of cognitive and social/emotional skills which feed into the crime and education model. This allows us to separately identify the …

Essays In International Economics: The Trade-Creation Effect Of Migration, Miguel Cardoso
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My thesis consists of three chapters relating to topics in International Economics. My first two chapters study the effects of migration flows on the economic outcomes of stayers for both receiving and sending countries. In both these chapters I develop and calibrate two distinct general equilibrium (GE) models to study the quantitative effect of migration on the real income of workers. The third chapter empirically investigates the relationship between firm export behaviour and their composition of foreign-born workers.
In my first chapter I develop a multi-country GE model where consumers choose where to reside, facing a trade-off between potentially earning …

Non-Linear Time Series Modelling With Applications To Equity And Fixed Income Markets, Galyna Grynkiv
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My thesis focuses on theoretical and empirical aspects of modelling time series during different financial and economic conditions. It consists of three separate chapters in which the properties of Threshold Vector Autoregressive Model (TVAR) models are addressed with subsequent applications to equity and fixed income markets. In the first chapter, which is a joint work with my supervisor Lars Stentoft, we examine the steady state properties of the TVAR model. Assuming the trigger variable is exogenous and the regime process follows a Bernoulli distribution, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution. The derived stationarity …
Separating The Sands: Karl Clark And Early Oil Sands Research In Alberta, Shane Roberts
Separating The Sands: Karl Clark And Early Oil Sands Research In Alberta, Shane Roberts
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Karl Clark’s research on the oil sands had a huge impact on the province of Alberta. From the 1920s to the 1950s, Clark was one of few researchers who remained involved throughout the entire developmental period of the oil sands industry. Clark’s persistence and systematic experimentation led to the development of an effective hot water separation process which resulted in viable commercial development of the oil sands. Without his extensive experience and sustained involvement and passion for the project, the oil sands would not have been developed when they were. The sparse earlier historiography of the developmental period has tended …
