Many have argued that the 2016 Presidential election was influenced by an unprecedented upsurge in “fake news,” facilitated by evolving technology and relationships with social media. Where did this subgenre of media come from, how is it promoted and consumed, and what role does it currently play in popular culture? How do “information bubbles” form and how do they influence information-sharing and beliefs? What role do institutions, from libraries to the mainstream media, play in the social life of misinformation in popular culture?
