An Investigation Of Change Mechanisms Using Psychophysiological Data: Child-Centered Play Therapy With Children Exposed To Adverse Childhood Experiences, Caitlin Frawley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Children who endure complex trauma and multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) suffer with various physical, social, and mental health-related consequences, such as increased rates of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cardiometabolic disorders, substance abuse disorders, ischemic heart disease, and suicidality. Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a promising evidence-based child mental health intervention, and researchers have demonstrated the efficacy of CCPT for improving empathy, social competence, behavior problems, and self-regulation among children with multiple ACE exposures. In the current study, the researcher examined the co-regulatory process and relational mechanisms of CCPT with children with histories of complex …

Contributions To Professional School Counselors Entering And Remaining In The Profession: A Grounded Theory, Kathryn Babb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

As the mental health needs of children and adolescents have reached a crisis level, the need for trained mental health professionals in the field is as important as ever. However, many states are currently experiencing a shortage of educators, including school counselors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the factors that contribute to school counselors selecting their career, as well as understanding what elements lead to the retention of professional school counselors. As there are no existing theories related to understanding the career choice of professional school counselors, nor pertaining to the supports leading to the retention …

Investigating Group Differences Of Mental Health Service Use (Tele-Mental Health, Face-To-Face Counseling, And No Counseling) On Psychological Openness, Levels Of Computer Self-Efficacy, And Coping Behavior In Young Adults During Covid-19, Lea Herbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Given the severity and prevalence of mental health concerns among young adults, universities and community clinics have been increasingly invested in improving counseling utilization. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the development of online therapies. Although the availability of online therapies has increased, the process outcomes of actual service users remain unclear. The Theory of Planned Behavior was used to guide the examination of young adults' use of mental health services, and explore group differences in psychological openness, coping, and computer efficacy based on counseling modality. A total of 248 college-aged participants with three help seeking behaviors (tele-mental health …

A Quantitative Examination Of The Relationship Between Curiosity, Cultural Humility, And Multicultural Counseling Competence In Master's-Level Counselors-In-Training Enrolled In Cacrep-Accredited Programs, Amber Haley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

For decades, researchers and counselor educators have emphasized the importance of developing counselors prepared to serve a diverse society. However, there is still much debate around which factors contribute to the development of a culturally competent counselor. The influence of curiosity in the development of competence has been researched in the field of education, however, curiosity has not yet been studied in counseling as it relates to counselors' openness and competence in working with clients perceived as different from themselves. The author conducted a quantitative research study to examine the influence of curiosity and cultural humility in master's level counselors-in-training …

Note To Survivors: An Analysis Of Suicide Discourse On Suicide Noted And The Figured World Of Suicide, Breahannah Hilaire

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The purpose of this discourse analytic study was to explore and examine suicide attempt survivors' suicidal discourse. Although there is robust knowledge and quantitative research regarding suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, qualitative research on this population could help to expand what is known about and what can help to prevent future suicide attempts. Often, the research on suicidal ideation and attempts have focused on prevention, intervention, and behavioral risk factors. Prior research concentrates on suicide risk and protective factors, yet little is written about the basis and origin of suicidal ideation and behavior among adolescents. Further, few of these studies …

Couples With Infertility: The Influence Of Quality Of Life, Relationship Satisfaction, Resilience, Depression, And Shame, Nikole Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The purpose of this study was to investigate the directional relationship between fertility related quality of life, relationship satisfaction, resilience, depression, and shame amongst individuals and couples with infertility. This study tested the hypothesized directional relationship that individuals and couples with infertility (N = 556) with a greater level of fertility related quality of life (FertiQol) would have (a) increased relationship satisfaction (CSI), (b) increased resilience (CD-RISC), (c) decreased depression (PROMIS), and (d) decreased shame (FSCRS), through structural equation modeling (SEM) and the actor partner interdependence model (APIM). Also, the researcher tested the dyadic influence of fertility related quality of …

Highly Sensitive Child Scale For Preschool Age Children: Development, Initial Validation Of A New Instrument, Bethany Russell Jan 2021

Highly Sensitive Child Scale For Preschool Age Children: Development, Initial Validation Of A New Instrument, Bethany Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The health of the caregiver-child relationship is imperative for positive long-term mental health outcomes in children and is dependent on caregivers' understanding of their child's behaviors. Misunderstanding a child's behaviors prevents caregivers from responding to their child in a nurturing manner, which creates disconnection in the caregiver-child relationship. Unfortunately, children with sensory processing sensitivity are particularly likely to experience such misunderstanding in their relationships with caregivers. Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is a temperament trait manifesting in stronger neurological and emotional responses to stimuli. To increase understanding of children's needs through proper discovery of SPS, the researcher developed the Highly Sensitive …

A Critical Microethnographic Examination Of Power Exchange, Role Identity And Agency With Black Bdsm Practitioners, Amber Norman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The practice of BDSM (Bondage/Discipline, Dominance/Submission, and Sadomasochism) is a roleplay activity that facilitates the examination of power dynamics through erotic play. Historically, the mental health community relegated BDSM as a deviant sexual practice. Modern therapeutic perspectives, however, affirm the normality of practitioners and report psychological benefits of BDSM. Nevertheless, the practice remains stigmatized and misunderstood. The goal of this research was to examine how BDSM works, and how power is exchanged within relationships. More specifically, the experiences of Black BDSM practitioners were investigated to add nuance to how racial dynamics further impact power relationships. Ethnographic procedures were applied to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

This study explores the lived experiences of survivors of mass shootings and their family members' experiences of relational loss and growth. There is limited research on mass shooting survivors, with most of it focusing on post-traumatic stress disorder and other diagnosable mental health concerns. Until this study, the voices of survivors and their family members were absent from literature. The field of grief and traumatic loss typically refers to experiences related to the death of a loved one. However, this study seeks to expand the understanding on how exposure to a traumatic experience accompanies intangible, relational, and disenfranchised grief for …
