Skill Builder: Assistive Technology For Developing Skill And Habits, Aaron Kay

The Skill Builder application is assistive technology for helping individuals build skills through reminders and self-reporting feedback. The application has been built to support Android and iOS devices and followed a user-centric design methodology. Skill Builder’s architecture and development processes are set forth using cross-platform development environments and a native software development kit for the three different versions of the application that were built. The strengths and weaknesses of each of the platforms are explored.

The Vocational Rehabilitation program exists to assist individuals with disabilities to attain, secure and benefit from employment. The purpose of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA), which included the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, is to empower individuals with disabilities to maximize employment. The Act was reauthorized as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. The Act includes significant changes to rehabilitation service delivery including a stronger emphasis on services to youth and outreach to minority populations. The director of Guidance in the Arizona State Department of Public Instruction realizing the great need for more experimental programs, proposed that part of the [National Defense Education Act of 1958] monies in Arizona be used for the purpose of developing pilot projects in the elementary schools. Schools that had expressed interest in a possible elementary guidance project were contacted and invited to write a proposal with the assistance of the State Department.
