The Alt-Right's Use Of President Donald Trump's Twitter Account As A Propaganda Device, Erin Nicole Jorden Sep 2019

The Alt-Right's Use Of President Donald Trump's Twitter Account As A Propaganda Device, Erin Nicole Jorden

Erin Jorden

The long campaign to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act situated President Donald J. Trump in a context where attacks on President Barack Obama’s signature legislation symbolized a broader repudiation of his legacy. Even more than mainstream Republican partisans, the altright blogosphere celebrated the demise of the law to symbolically cleanse the nation of Obama’s influence. Trump attempted to honor his pledge to end Obamacare in his first year of office with his support of the American Health Care Act (March 2017), Better Care Reconciliation Act (July 2017), and the Graham-Cassidy Bill (September 2017). Members of the alt-right reframed …

Revisiting Stremii: Social Media Crisis Communication During Hurricane Matthew, Margaret C. Stewart, Cory Young Aug 2019

Revisiting Stremii: Social Media Crisis Communication During Hurricane Matthew, Margaret C. Stewart, Cory Young

Margaret Stewart

Social media platforms influence the flow of information and technologically mediated communication during a storm. In 2015, Stewart and Wilson introduced the STREMII (pronounced STREAM-ee) as a six-phase model for social media crisis communication in an eff ort to assist institutions and organizations during unanticipated events, using the crisis of Hurricane Sandy as an applied example. Since the inception of the model, several advancements in social media strategy have revealed the opportunity for further development. This current work presents a revision of the original model, emphasizing the need for ongoing social listening and engagement with target audiences. These aspects of …

A Game Industry Beyond Diversity: Systemic Barriers To Participation In South Korea, Florence M. Chee Mar 2019

A Game Industry Beyond Diversity: Systemic Barriers To Participation In South Korea, Florence M. Chee

Florence Chee

Digital gaming has become a prominent part of mainstream culture. However, as one may observe in the public exhibitions of this form of play, the multitude of reasons for participation in the games industry are especially divided along gender lines. This paper is an analysis of themes emerging from the critical ethnographic examination of South Korea’s1 online game culture that, upon closer and iterative analyses, point to additional socioeconomic complications and systemic barriers to women’s equitable participation in the game development and production. Using South Korea’s national context as a point of reference, the findings from this case study offer …

Media Literacy And Climate Change In A Post-Truth Society, James S. Damico, Mark Baildon, Alexandra Panos Jan 2019

Media Literacy And Climate Change In A Post-Truth Society, James S. Damico, Mark Baildon, Alexandra Panos

Alexandra Panos

In this article we draw from ecolingusitics (Stibbe, 2015) and a civic media literacy framework (Author, in press; Masyada & Washington, 2016) to consider what happened when three pairs of preservice teachers with different academic backgrounds and climate change beliefs jointly evaluated the reliability of two media sources that make opposing arguments about climate change. An ecolinguistics perspective attends to the environmental impact of the “stories-we-live-by” (Stibbe, 2015) and a civic media literacy lens highlights the centrality of dialogue and deliberation along with critical reading when evaluating the reliability of information sources about complex socioscientific topics like climate change. Our …

“Bullets Of Truth”: Julian Assange And The Politics Of Transparency, Mark Fenster Dec 2018

“Bullets Of Truth”: Julian Assange And The Politics Of Transparency, Mark Fenster

Mark Fenster

This essay updates (to early 2019) earlier work on the WikiLeaks story in order to consider what more recent developments reveal about the theoretical promise that Assange articulated at the time of the website’s emergence. Assange has characterized secrecy as both a form and symptom of corruption, and ultimately as the foundation of a “conspiracy” of governance that states like the U.S. inflict on their subjects and the world. He advocates a non-political, vigilante form of transparency in which WikiLeaks serves as a neutral entity that will save the public and free the world with information. He predicted that corrupt …

Feed: State Transparency Amidst Informational Surplus, Mark Fenster

Mark Fenster

An email arrives, promising inside information about the perfidious forces that secretly rule the nation. A Twitter feed from a prominent insider at an establishment think-tank announces the latest disclosure about the president’s secret role in the Russian conspiracy to manipulate the election that elevated him with the blast of toy cannon. Meanwhile, the President’s tweets serve to annoy, distract, humor, or comfort those who see them, and they above all announce some truth about his presidency.

Debates about government transparency presume that the state controls an informational spigot, which can be made to allow information to flow or to …

Making When Ends Don’T Meet: Articulation Work And Visibility Of Domestic Labor During Grassroots Innovation., Prashant Rajan Dec 2018

Making When Ends Don’T Meet: Articulation Work And Visibility Of Domestic Labor During Grassroots Innovation., Prashant Rajan

Makerspaces, hackathons, and technology incubators are key emerging sites for technical communication practice and research. Yet, little is known about how resource-constrained, non-Western families practice DIY (Do It Yourself). Revisiting craft’s roots in families practicing artisanal trades, I find that the visibility of DIY innovation relies on the infrastructuring of family members who perform articulation work despite tremendous economic risk through traditional and transgressive family and gender roles and identities.

From Little Princess To Mother Of Dragons: Daenerys Targaryen’S Heroine’S Journey, Hallie M. Whiting Dec 2018

From Little Princess To Mother Of Dragons: Daenerys Targaryen’S Heroine’S Journey, Hallie M. Whiting

Scott T. Allison

In Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen’s name contains almost all of her life: Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons (Daenerys Targaryen, 2017). While the lengthiness of her name certainly speaks to her ability as a conqueror and ruler, it does not do her life story justice. Daenerys serves as a heroine to not only the fictional world which …

Making Meaning Of Media Development Today, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh Dec 2018

Making Meaning Of Media Development Today, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh

This article aims to fill a gap in the academic literature on how employees at a media
development intermediary construct meaning of their work. Based on in-depth interviews
with 18 employees of Internews, this research shows that employees believe the
organization has “evolved” from the past to include the entire “information ecosystem”
today. Themes that emerged include a focus on information as a solution, an emphasis on
local communities, the desire to give voice to marginalized communities, and a practice
of listening. Interviewees strictly adhered to official narratives of their work and to
contemporary development orthodoxy, perhaps because of group …
