In February 2006, Thomas Jefferson University went live with a new instant messaging (IM) service. This paper reviews the first 102 transcripts to examine question types and usage patterns. In addition, the paper highlights lessons learned in instituting the service. In 2005, Thomas Jefferson University started an
institutional repository (IR) and named it the
Jefferson Digital Commons (JDC). Intended as
a showcase for faculty scholarship, it has evolved
to also serve as the University Press for original
journals and newsletters, and as an institutional
archive.
Since its creation, the JDC has accepted and
archived more than 1,500 documents from
faculty, students, departments and Library
collections in our academic health sciences
setting. We share the lessons we’ve learned
about marketing techniques, common IR issues,
and advantages for a library.

The new website has the potential to improve member communication, to promote the profession and chapter to library school students and other non-members, to recruit new members, and to provide education about careers in health science librarianship.

To determine what services and programs of national library associations are most valuable to newer librarians. As young librarians enter the workforce, many are deciding whether or not to join and become involved with library associations such as SLA, MLA, and their regional chapters. What they decide will become increasingly important to library associations as the traditional member base reaches retirement age. To determine what might attract younger librarians, a survey was emailed to various listservs to ascertain what services are considered most valuable.
