Measuring The Effect Of Affordances On A Crash Cart Medicine Packaging, Javier De La Fuente, Daniel Tachibana, Kristen Leemon, Christine Liu, Colleen L. Twomey, Soma Roy, Laura Bix, Scott Bisheff

Graphic Communication

Abstract: In the United States, most drugs stored in crash carts of emergency rooms are packaged in folding cartons with opening mechanisms that involve pressing and tearing the bottom of the package. Anecdotal evidence and a previous study conducted by the research team suggest that these packages are counterintuitive for lay users. The concept of affordances, how design features communicate actionable possibilities, can be applied to improve the usability of packaging. In order to measure the effect of individual design features and previous experience on opening time and error frequency during first opening attempt, a commercially available package for epinephrine …

Printing Transparent Grid Patterns With Conductive Silver Ink With Flexography, Colleen Twomey, Xiaoying Rong, Liam O'Hara, Charles Tonkin, Malcolm Keif

Graphic Communication

The printed electronics market, according to market research firm IDTechEx, is slated to grow from $16.04 billion in 2013 to $76.79 billion in 2023. Printing transparent grids with a known printing process such as flexography is attractive to this market because transparent grids are part of the fast-growing touch screen market (amongst others , and flexography offers a lowcost/high-volume print platform that can handle a variety of substrates, high press speeds, roll-toroll (R2R) printing, and the ability to handle different ink rheologies. However, flexography has print characteristics that can be problematic for printed electronics such as high image (feature) gain …

The Affect Of Versioned Package Design On Various Demographics, Howard E. Vogl, Colleen L. Twomey, Kristen Dang, Alexis B. Kelsey Jan 2015

The Affect Of Versioned Package Design On Various Demographics, Howard E. Vogl, Colleen L. Twomey, Kristen Dang, Alexis B. Kelsey

Graphic Communication

This study challenged the concept of a single best package design for food products. Research found that typography played a crucial role in the consumer’s perception of the quality and the value of a product. It was also found that, based on the consumer’s purchasing intention, the use of type or graphics on a package could have either a positive or a negative affect on consumer perception of product value and quality. In addition, this study pointed out that these variables require careful testing in the marketplace, which can only be achieved in package designs that can be economically tested …

Consumer Perception Of Tactile Packaging, Malcolm G. Keif, Colleen Twomey, Andrea Stoneman Jan 2015

Consumer Perception Of Tactile Packaging, Malcolm G. Keif, Colleen Twomey, Andrea Stoneman

Graphic Communication

A choice-based conjoint study was conducted sampling 400 individuals to determine their preference for Soft Touch and raised tactile coatings, which are sometimes called Hi Rise or profile coatings. Soft Touch coatings have a velvety, warm feel to them, and Hi Rise coatings simulate embossing with a glossy appearance to them. Both are considered tactile coatings, engaging the sense of touch.

Demographic profile data, level of agreement about statements related to cosmetic packaging and packaging choice set selections were collected. The conjoint sets contained three attributes: design color, tactile coatings, and price.

Design choice was split. Approximately half of the …

Development Of Mno2 Cathode Inks For Flexographically Printed Rechargeable Zinc-Based Battery, Zuoqian Wang, Rich Winslow, Deepa Madan, Paul K. Wright, James W. Evans, Malcolm Keif, Xiaoying Rong

Graphic Communication

A novel roll-to-roll flexographic printing process for rechargeable zinc-based battery manufacturing was presented in this paper. Based on the fundamental operating mechanism of flexography, key criteria for developing functional flexographic printing inks were established, including composite ink rheology (steady-state viscosity and yield stress), ink wettability as well as ink dispersing qualities. A variety of MnO2 cathode inks were developed and analyzed comprehensively based on these criteria. A novel type of aqueous cathode ink based on PSBR polymeric binder showed excellent flexographic printability as well as promising electrochemical performance.

Graphic Communication

While much energy storage research focuses on the performance of individual components, such as the electrolyte or a single electrode, few investigate the electrochemical system as a whole. This research reports on the design, composition, and performance of a Zn/MnO2 battery as affected by the manufacturing method and next-generation gel polymer electrolyte composed of the ionic liquid [BMIM][Otf], ZnOtf salt, and PVDF-HFP polymer binder. Materials and manufacturing tests are discussed with a focus on water concentration, surface features as produced by printing processes, and the effect of including a gel polymer phase. Cells produced for this research generated open …

Accommodating Climate Change Science: James Hansen And The Rhetorical/Political Emergence Of Global Warming, Richard Besel Mar 2013

Accommodating Climate Change Science: James Hansen And The Rhetorical/Political Emergence Of Global Warming, Richard Besel

Communication Studies

Dr. James Hansen’s 1988 testimony before the U.S. Senate was an important turning point in the history of global climate change. However, no studies have explained why Hansen’s scientific communication in this deliberative setting was more successful than his testimonies of 1986 and 1987. This article turns to Hansen as an important case study in the rhetoric of accommodated science, illustrating how Hansen successfully accommodated his rhetoric to his non-scientist audience given his historical conditions and rhetorical constraints. This article (1) provides a richer explanation for the rhetorical/political emergence of global warming as an important public policy issue in the …

Beware The Whine Of The Privileged, Jnan A. Blau, John T. Warren Nov 2012

Beware The Whine Of The Privileged, Jnan A. Blau, John T. Warren

Communication Studies

At the annual meeting of the National Communication Association in November of 2010, John and I presented a co-authored, performed script as part of a panel entitled "Complicating Performances of Privilege," sponsored by the Performance Studies Division. We had conceived and proposed the panel ourselves. The panel, in fact, had come into being as a result of a series of conversations the two of us had been having, on and off, for a while, about matters of privilege. In and through our dialoguing, we were seeking to somehow balance the expression of our personal experiences (and frustrations) With the careful …

Color Measurement On Substrates With Optical Brightening Agents, Howard E. Vogl, Malcolm G. Keif Jun 2012

Color Measurement On Substrates With Optical Brightening Agents, Howard E. Vogl, Malcolm G. Keif

Graphic Communication

Yellow and blue Pantone colors were printed on a substrate with high Optical Brightening Agent (OBA) levels and then measured under different measurement conditions as outlined in ISO 13655. Both colors exhibited large DEOO shifts with lighter screen tints, as more paper influenced the measurement. The Pantone colors were further analysed after being printed on two different substrates with varying OBAs. While the solids were color-matched to a DEOO of less than 1.0, the tints resulted in DEOO values above 7.0 due to more paper influence in the lighter screen tints.

Prolepsis And The Environmental Rhetoric Of Congressional Politics: Defeating The Climate Stewardship Act Of 2003, Richard Besel Jun 2012

Prolepsis And The Environmental Rhetoric Of Congressional Politics: Defeating The Climate Stewardship Act Of 2003, Richard Besel

Communication Studies

As a device of argumentative anticipation, prolepsis use generally is considered a positive rhetorical strategy. Turning to the Climate Stewardship Act (CSA) of 2003, this article contributes to our understanding of environmental communication, political argumentation, and rhetorical theory by examining how proleptic miscalculation can actually produce devastating consequences against one’s cause when used as a source of invention. Proponents of the CSA relied on creating proleptic arguments grounded in a scientific understanding of climate change to such an extent that they mistakenly downplayed the economic arguments against the Act. This orchestrated miscalculation was encouraged and strengthened by key US senators. …

Subjective Posture And Subjective Affluence: Chicago Field Theories In The U.S. Media And Political Systems, Kevin G. Barnhurst, Richard Besel, Christopher Bodmann Nov 2011

Subjective Posture And Subjective Affluence: Chicago Field Theories In The U.S. Media And Political Systems, Kevin G. Barnhurst, Richard Besel, Christopher Bodmann

Communication Studies

To further understanding of how individuals experience media and political systems, this article compares a project in the Chicago sociology tradition to concepts from Bourdieu's field theory and practical reason. Limited life history documents from Chicago working-class and more-advantaged young adults illustrate two interactionist concepts, subjective posture, one's stance toward media and politics, and subjective affluence, the range of empowerment the postures reveal. A stance as individual consumer, primarily in pursuit of entertainment, crossed over class lines, but elite participants had higher subjective affluence, with agency as political actors influencing others. The similarities illustrate an aspect of Bourdieu's habitus, and …

Opening The "Black Box" Of Climate Change Science: Actor-Network Theory And Rhetorical Practice In Scientific Controversies, Richard D. Besel Apr 2011

Opening The "Black Box" Of Climate Change Science: Actor-Network Theory And Rhetorical Practice In Scientific Controversies, Richard D. Besel

Communication Studies

In this essay, Joseph Barton’s controversial congressional investigation of the well-known ‘‘hockey-stick’’ study of climate change, produced by Michael Mann, Raymond Bradley, and Malcolm Hughes, is analyzed though the critical lens of actor-network theory. Turning to the works of Bruno Latour, Michel Callon, and John Law, this essay illustrates how the hockey-stick node of this rhetorical climate change actor-network was successfully defended by invoking the entire actor-network as an inventional resource. Suggestions for improving environmental communication and the theoretical linkages between rhetorical criticism, rhetoric of science, and actor-network theory are discussed.

Price, Edward Rockenstein, Kiran Ubhi, Van Phung, Natalie Maclean-Lewis, David A. Askay, Anna Cartier, Brian Spencer, Christina Patrick, Paula Desplats, Mark H. Ellisman, Eliezer Masliah

Communication Studies

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson’s Disease (PD) are neurodegenerative disorders of the aging population characterized by the abnormal accumulation of alpha-synuclein (alpha-syn). Previous studies have suggested that excitotoxicity may contribute to neurodegeneration in these disorders, however the underlying mechanisms and their relationship to alpha-syn remain unclear. For this study we proposed that accumulation of alpha-syn might result in alterations in metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR), particularly mGluR5 which has been linked to deficits in murine models of PD. In this context, levels of mGluR5 were analyzed in the brains of PD and DLB human cases and alpha-syn transgenic (tg) …

A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau Aug 2010

A Phan On Phish: Live Improvised Music In Five Performative Commitments, Jnan A. Blau

Communication Studies

Explored as a series of five interrelated performative commitments, the author takes seriously the notion that live musical performance, especially when it is pervaded by an improvisational ethos, can be quite powerful and well worth close examination. In particular, the band Phish, with its devout subcultural following of “phans,” is mined as a rich site for critical, theoretical, and descriptive fodder. The author writes as both a phan and a scholar, drawing from his own experiences seeing Phish live on many occasions as well as from an interdisciplinary body of scholarly literature. The essay provides insight not only into the …

Preaching, Prosperity, And Product Sales: A Profile Of On-Demand Digital Audio Offerings Of Christian Renewalist Ministries, Douglas J. Swanson

Journalism

In the United States alone, millions of listeners tune in to Internet-based audio-on-demand (commonly known as podcast programming). Religious programming is among the fastest-growing podcast areas. Since studies show that evangelicals are known to be quick to adopt new technology, this research involved a content analysis of 67 podcast episodes produced by five well-known renewalist evangelical ministries. The study found most podcasts were not original in content and were not consistently available for listeners to download. Also, the podcasts had poorer production values than would be expected from broadcast programming. A frame analysis identified ministries' justification of religious messages, listener …

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack Jan 2010

The Multidimensional Role Of Trust In Enabling Creativity Within Virtual Communities Of Practice: A Theoretical Model Integrating Swift, Knowledgebased, Institution-Based, And Organizational Trust, David Askay, April J. Spivack

Communication Studies

Virtual communities of practice are gaining attention among scholars and practitioners as managers and high-level executives look for ways to adapt to an ever-increasing rate of environmental change. These communities have been recognized as a tool for generating new ideas by accessing geographically distributed expertise. As most expert knowledge is tacit and tacit knowledge exchange is what leads to creativity, an understanding of antecedents to tacit knowledge exchange is needed. This manuscript responds by examining the role of trust, a well-known antecedent of creativity, within the context of virtual communities of practice. An interdisciplinary approach led to the development of …

Sense Of Community In Professional Virtual Communities, Anita Blanchard, David A. Askay, Katherine Frear Jan 2010

Sense Of Community In Professional Virtual Communities, Anita Blanchard, David A. Askay, Katherine Frear

Communication Studies

Sense of virtual community (feelings of identity, belonging, and attachment) is an essential component of virtual communities. In this chapter, we develop a model of how sense of virtual community develops in professional virtual communities. Based on sense of virtual community models in social virtual communities, we expect that the exchange of support, development of a group identity, and group norms will lead to a stronger professional sense of virtual community. Unlike social virtual communities, we also predict that employee/members occupational identification will increase professional sense of virtual community, particularly when the virtual community can provide support and information not …

What Lean Means For Printers: Reducing Setups And Makereadies Is Just The Beginning, Malcolm G. Keif Sep 2009

What Lean Means For Printers: Reducing Setups And Makereadies Is Just The Beginning, Malcolm G. Keif

Graphic Communication

Lean, Lean Manufacturing, Lean Principles. What is all this discussion of Lean? And what does it mean to the printer? First, let’s figure out what Lean is. Lean is a set of ideas, concepts, tools, and principles that were developed over a number of years, mostly by Toyota Motor Corp. as the Toyota Production System (TPS). The company developed this system as a means to be competitive in a difficult marketplace against large competitors with greater resources. The values that underpin Lean include: respect for people, continuous improvement, minimizing waste, just-in-time (JIT) production, custom and small-lot production, problem solving, teamwork, …

Crafting A Successful Manuscript: Lessons From 131 Reviews, Steven G. Rogelberg, Marisa Adelman, David Askay

Communication Studies

Having good data is simply not enough to assure publication in a high quality academic journal. The data must be sold, justified, described, and packaged in a compelling way. In this paper, we focus on how to prepare a quality manuscript. To do so, we content analyzed reviewer comments from nearly 100 manuscripts that were submitted to the Journal of Business and Psychology over a 4-month time period (November 2008–April 2009). This yielded 131 reviews. The goal was to identify areas of concern commonly expressed by manuscript reviewers. By doing so, it is our hope that we can better educate …
