The High School/College Connection In Forensics, C. Thomas Preston Jr.
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
To pursue the goal of reaching more students in the entire community, this paper contains five parts. First, I shall present an overall attitude that should be taken by collegiate' directors when interacting with high school coaches. Second, I shall examine traditional ways of collegiate directors promoting and benefiting from high school forensics within the urban setting. Third, I offer innovative ways of approaching high school programs. Fourth, I discuss how to cope with the diversity of students a successful high school/college connection would attract to not only the major urban university, but to the forensic community at large. Finally, …

The High School/College Connetion In Individual Events, Charles John Mcgeever
Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events
One of the problems for the twentieth century mind, asserts Walter J. Ong in his text. Some Proligemina for Cultural and Religious History. is that it has devalued orality and become a prisoner of the culture in which the twentieth-century mind has tried to mature. "Contemporary man," states Ong, "finds it exceedingly difficult and, in many instances, quite impossible, to sense what the spoken word actually is. He feels it is a modification of something which ought to be written" (19). Not only does contemporary man find print alien from the idiolect of homo dicens. but also he finds the …

Strong, Powerful, And Beautiful, Katie O'Malley
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
In the months of September, October, and half of November (2019) I have observed and taken note of my performance of gender in social groups (athletics and sorority) and under the constraints of gendered expectations on Pepperdine University’s campus. In addition to these observations, I reflected on influential past experiences and re-read journal entries from my time at college. Through this self-analysis I have come to realize that my own gender performance constitutes both sides of the culturally affirmed binary with my female masculinity partnered with my permeable ego-boundary. Furthermore I found that while my gender performance breaks some of …

Resiliency Vs. The Coronavirus, Shelby Little
Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research
Nature is a wild and untamed force for which we will never have all the answers, but isn’t that what makes it so special? At Pepperdine, we pride ourselves on being Waves. Waves of character, leadership, purpose, and service. Scientifically, waves can come in many different forms, whether it be a sound wave, visible light wave, or a microwave. Yet the wave that overpowers the rest is an ocean wave, the strongest force in nature. When I think of the ocean, I think of a hungry and relentless force, something with a strong foundation that can be stopped by almost …
How Communication With Parents Affects The Psychological Well-Being Of Traditional First-Year University Students, Jena Thormodson, Hannah Torkelson, Benjamin Diers
How Communication With Parents Affects The Psychological Well-Being Of Traditional First-Year University Students, Jena Thormodson, Hannah Torkelson, Benjamin Diers
Research and Scholarship Symposium Posters
Traditional first-year university students are experiencing one of life’s greatest transitions. For many students, they are learning how to live independently for the first time, navigate relationships and support, and deal with new experiences that happen in college. Since traditional first-year students are not considered developmentally as adults, this study sought to determine how parental communication can influence how students feel during this time of transition of both college and emerging adulthood. More specifically we measured how the frequency of communication and type of parental support can affect the student’s psychological well-being. A survey was used to gather this data …
Peer Social Support In The Classroom, Dennis Paul Debeck
Peer Social Support In The Classroom, Dennis Paul Debeck
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Social support in the classroom is an under-researched area of instructional
communication literature. Cutrona and Russell’s (1990) five dimensions of social support were
used as a framework to investigate peer social support. Those five dimensions were expected to
predict engagement, classroom participation behavior, attitude towards attending class, and
identification with the university. Participants (n=222) were asked to respond to measures that
were developed to assess the five social support types and the four criterion variables. All the
types of social support were found to be positively correlated with the criterion variables when
the zero-order correlations were examined. It was also …
An Analysis Of The Amount Of Sleep And The Effects It Has On Athletic Capabilities And Routine Tasks In College Athletes, Carly Simonian, Kira Sheahan, Kylie Christensen, Darice Haywood
An Analysis Of The Amount Of Sleep And The Effects It Has On Athletic Capabilities And Routine Tasks In College Athletes, Carly Simonian, Kira Sheahan, Kylie Christensen, Darice Haywood
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
College student athletes are under a lot of pressure to accomplish all that is expected of them which may lead to other areas of their lives being neglected, including sleep. The amount of sleep a student athlete gets is crucial in their accomplishments both off and on the field. The researchers chose to investigate how the amount of sleep an athlete gets affects their day to day life. Specifically, the researchers explored the correlation between the amount of sleep an athlete got and how positively they rated their day through an online daily survey throughout a two week span of …
