Post Cancellation Access (PCA) journal collections can improve library services. Other libraries can take better advantage of the PCA rights they negotiate and serve as better stewards of the rights they acquire. At the Electronic Resources Minnesota (ERMN) conference in 2022, we demonstrated how to create and maintain PCA collections using the Alma library management system. These collections are useful for several purposes and contribute directly to how we perform holdings analysis.

The study illustrates the development and management of legal information resources (LIR) in the Allahabad High Court Judges’ Library (AHCJL). This work is based on research conducted by researchers as part of his Ph.D. Work. The AHCJL has a collection of numerous types of legal information resources. The AHCJL is accessible only by the honourable judges and court clerks. With rising costs and limited resources, it has become increasingly important for academic libraries to make acquisition decisions prudently to build a collection that meets its users' learning, teaching, and research needs. As such, Singapore Management University's (“SMU”) Libraries use a patron-driven acquisitions process, whereby acquisition decisions are guided by users' needs and requests. This article seeks to investigate if the current patron-driven acquisitions approach adequately meets the research needs of SMU's users through a mixed methods approach. Working with large data sets can be a challenge for both librarians and external stakeholders. Vendors often provide scads of data about the products we use, but sifting through it takes time. Visualization tools exist to help distill meaning from particularly dense data. This talk provides a look at how data visualization approaches can differ based on a variety of organizational factors such as staffing capacity, costs, and specific project requirements. Purpose - Strategic business partnerships inform business faculty-librarian (BFL) collaborations. This paper seeks to address how the motivations for business partnerships and faculty-librarian collaborations are similar. A conceptual model suggests that the depth of the BFL relationship significantly enhances electronic collection development outcomes. Design/methodology/approach - Literature concerning strategic business alliances, faculty-librarian collaborations, and collection development was examined to determine whether principles that are applied to strategic business alliances can also be applied to BFL collaborations. E-books promise users convenience and accessibility, but library e-book platforms contain so many barriers to use and access that patrons often turn away in frustration. In addition, aggregators’ e-book platforms often include intrusive, onerous digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. The traditional solution of DRM-free e-books are generally only available only in large and expensive publisher packages. One approach to solving these problems is an evidence-based selection of e-books program; it not only offers access to hundreds of DRM-free, unlimited simultaneous-user e-books that are integrated with similar e-journal content, but also includes an agreement that libraries will only purchase titles with …

Collection Microclimates – Citation Study Of Journal Usage Differences At Department And Research Group Level, Ian Mccullough

Research, Publications, and Presentations

Citations from journal articles and dissertations from the Department of Polymer Science (DPS) at the University of Akron from 2006–2011 were examined and journals ranked in order of usage frequency. Journal usage of dissertations and articles was also ranked within research groups. 85 dissertations and 464 faculty publications that included 378 publications from 16 dissertation advisors were examined. Citations to 1422 journals were counted and recorded. Findings demonstrate that individual groups vary wildly in journal usage representing microclimates for collection development purposes.

Abstract

Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries (VCUL) has been faced with serious space problems for more than a decade. Initiatives to correct this include the digital shift. VCUL’s new policy stipulates that journal subscriptions should be electronic only, wherever available. Where publishers offer both print and online for the same price, the library donates the print instead of keeping them on the shelves. Replacing print series with the electronic version as they become available is another ongoing practice. Added to these is moving infrequently used or superseded materials to storage as a continuous activity. All these were short‐lived measures until now. …

Current Trends In The Planning And Development Of Northern European Collections, Richard Hacken

Current planning and development of collections in the social sciences and humanities for German-speaking Europe, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia reflect the changing needs of research, strict budgetary limits, the prevailing publishing market in those countries, and certain innovations in library automation. Librarians responsible for supporting an area study of Northern Europe may shape the trends to their advantage by careful policy planning, by informed financial choices, by the use of data bases and resource sharing, by privately-nurtured channels of acquisition and support and by a continuing self-education program that might include participation in the activities of the CES and WESS.
