Feast And Famine: A Statewide Science Serial Collection Assessment Inillinois, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Chew Chiat Naun, Michael Norman, Karen Schmidt
Staff publications, research, and presentations
In 2004, a group of Illinois librarians was awarded a research grant to assess the state of Illinois’ science serial collection. This collection assessment focused on academic libraries in the state, specifically those participating in the Consortium of Academic Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), but also including another 10 academic libraries in the state that do not belong to the consortium. Current serial subscription data were collected through both automated and manual means and the analysis was conducted in conjunction with Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System. Due to cataloging limitations and issues surrounding different ISSNs for print and electronic formats, the …

Managing The Transition From Large-Scale Oral History Research To Digital Archive: The Digital Librarian’S Perspective, Cory K. Lampert
Managing The Transition From Large-Scale Oral History Research To Digital Archive: The Digital Librarian’S Perspective, Cory K. Lampert
Library Faculty Presentations
We live in an increasingly digital world. Preparing for this conference I composed my paper in word-processing software, e-mailed the draft to my co-presenters, selected digital images and screenshots for our presentation, and announced my travel plans on the library staff blog. Cultural materials are also riding the wave to go digital and oral histories provide intimate pathways into the stories of our world. Despite experience in digitizing other formats, many institutions (such as UNLV) are just beginning to explore partnerships with oral historians, IT departments, and libraries to tackle the work of mounting transcripts, images, audio, and video into …

Adventures In Digitization: A New Librarian Shares Five Hard Earned Tips To Avoid Project Management Pitfalls, Cory K. Lampert
Library Faculty Presentations
Many institutions are feeling pressure to embark on digitization projects to provide greater access and visibility to their unique materials. Digitization initiatives have numerous benefits, but they can also drain staff time and resources if they are not planned and prioritized well. As new librarians are hired into increasingly technical entry-level positions, they are often expected to contribute to or lead digitization projects requiring a diverse skill set. Learn five key tips to help recent grads and new digital project managers to avoid pitfalls. Topics will include: the importance of the planning process, involving key people at the right time, …

Looking For A Link: Comparing Faculty Citations Pre And Post Big Deals, Donald Taylor
Looking For A Link: Comparing Faculty Citations Pre And Post Big Deals, Donald Taylor
E-JASL 1999-2009 (Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
Big Deals expand an institution's access to scholarly literature, with usage statistics showing that previously unavailable journals receive significant usage. To determine if faculty use these new e-journals in their research, the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Library analyzed SFU citation data to journals from selected Big Deals for two years prior to signing a major Big Deal (1993 and 1998) and for two consecutive years following the Big Deal (2004 and 2005). Pre Big Deal, the percentage of citations to journals that are part of Big Deals but were previously not subscribed to was an average of 2.6%. Post …

The Hospital Grantsmanship Center: A New Role For Hospital Librarians, Paul M. Blobaum
The Hospital Grantsmanship Center: A New Role For Hospital Librarians, Paul M. Blobaum
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Securing external support from competitive grants, corporate sponsorships, and fund raising is a growing area of interest in many types of non-profit organizations, including health care. Many different types of grants are available from both public and private agencies at the national, state, and local levels which can provide additional support to the hospital’s mission of patient care, teaching, and research. Patient care professionals as well as administrators are often unaware of what external funding opportunities are available, and how to secure those funds. Hospital Librarians have the opportunity to establish new roles as resources for information about grants which …
