Although female graduate psychology students outnumber male students three to one (Fowler, et. al., 2018), women are still likely to experience more challenges than men during their doctoral programs (Bireda, 2015). Women doctoral students are faced with the challenges of learning how to integrate their personal identities such as partner, mother, or caregiver with their emerging identity of academician (Rockinson-Szapkiw et al., 2017). Women doctoral students often describe these conflicting roles as altering their overall self-concept, which often leads to feelings of loss, mistrust, and disconnect (Balatti & Whitehouse, 2001).
