Sleep And Early Childhood Stressors In College Students: Examining Alcohol Use As A Moderator, Sylvain N. Chassagneux May 2023

Sleep And Early Childhood Stressors In College Students: Examining Alcohol Use As A Moderator, Sylvain N. Chassagneux

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Early childhood stressors (ECS) consist of certain emotional, physical, or sexual experiences that may have long term consequences including sleep problems. Previous research has also found that alcohol use can negatively affect sleep; however, few studies have investigated alcohol use as a moderator of the relationship between sleep and other variables. In the current study, we examined whether the relationship between a general measure of ECS and sleep in college students may be moderated by alcohol use, a common psychoactive substance among this age group. Additionally, we examined this model with emotional abuse and neglect as a measure of ECS. …

Associations Among Self-Regulation, Life Stress, And Suicidal Ideation In Adolescents: A Developmental Psychopathology Approach, Yifan Yuan May 2023

Associations Among Self-Regulation, Life Stress, And Suicidal Ideation In Adolescents: A Developmental Psychopathology Approach, Yifan Yuan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: Suicide is a major public health concern among adolescents. Although research has made progress in identifying risk factors for youth suicidality, there has been less focus on early developmental antecedents of youth suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Taking a developmental psychopathology perspective, we examined longitudinal associations among multiple aspects of self-regulation (i.e., emotion regulation, emotion reactivity, parasympathetic regulation, inhibitory control), life stress, and suicidal ideation. We hypothesized that deficits in self-regulation during middle childhood and early adolescence and greater life stress during early and middle childhood would predict higher lifetime suicidal ideation reported in adolescence.

Method: Participants were adolescents ( …

The Superpower Of Sleep: Poor Sleep Quality Predicts Worse Executive Control Under Conditions Of Stress, Lilly M. Mcclendon Apr 2023

The Superpower Of Sleep: Poor Sleep Quality Predicts Worse Executive Control Under Conditions Of Stress, Lilly M. Mcclendon

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background: Over 60% of college students do not obtain the minimum recommended amount of sleep daily and over 54% experience above average levels of stress. Exposure to stress and poor sleep are each related to executive control, which is a set of cognitive abilities that are essential for daily functioning. Despite the prevalence of poor sleep and high stress, studies have rarely examined the joint impact of sleep and stress on executive control in students.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine whether the impairing effect of stress on executive control is stronger in individuals who obtain poor …

Mindfulness And Avoidant Coping: Examining The Behavioral Correlates Of Suicidal Ideation Among Sexual Minority College Students, Matt Siroty Dec 2022

Mindfulness And Avoidant Coping: Examining The Behavioral Correlates Of Suicidal Ideation Among Sexual Minority College Students, Matt Siroty

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals are at higher risk for mental health problems including suicidal ideation (SI). Previous research has indicated that coping strategies and mindfulness may explain disparities in SI among LGB individuals. The aim of the present study was to examine how coping strategies (self-sufficient, avoidant, socially-supported) and trait mindfulness facets (observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging, non-reactivity) contribute to these differences. The sample consisted of 927 college students, 124 of whom identified as LGB. Within the analytic sample, a majority identified as women (n = 639, 68.9%), 18 or 19 years of age (n …

Memory Suppression: The Importance Of Baseline Learning For The Think/No-Think Task, Curtis Rogers May 2021

Memory Suppression: The Importance Of Baseline Learning For The Think/No-Think Task, Curtis Rogers

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Studies using the think/no-think task have never addressed the baselines they use throughout the experiment. This study's primary goal was to investigate the effect differing baselines for word-pair learning (50% vs. 75%) would have on the think/no-think task. A replication of Anderson and Greene’s 2001 study using the Think/No-Think task was performed using either a 50% or 75% baseline as a threshold for participants moving to the think/no-think phase of the experiment. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this study implemented the think/no-think task online. Recall was evaluated using same and independent-probe memory tests.

Firstly, this study replicated the think/no-think effect …

Toward A Spectrum Of Moral Harm: A New Paradigm, David Gosling, Collen Grunhaus, Daniel Gutierrez Jul 2019

Toward A Spectrum Of Moral Harm: A New Paradigm, David Gosling, Collen Grunhaus, Daniel Gutierrez

Arts & Sciences Articles

Moral harm is the pain, anguish, or trauma experienced as a result of violations to one’s value system. Researchers have analyzed the experience of moral harm through the lenses of moral injury among military personnel, and moral distress among helping professionals. Although both fields of research share similar frames of reference, the current project is the first known work to conceptualize moral injury and moral distress within the same theoretical model. The authors posit that moral injury and moral distress are experiences along a spectrum; both struggle and recovery can be understood within this context. Implications for ethical practice and …

Distress Tolerance Predicts Day-To-Day Emotion Regulation Behaviors, Maria Alexandra Larrazabal Carrillo Jan 2019

Distress Tolerance Predicts Day-To-Day Emotion Regulation Behaviors, Maria Alexandra Larrazabal Carrillo

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Distress tolerance (DT), or the ability to effectively withstand aversive internal experiences, is related to diverse physical and mental health benefits, including resilience to depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. DT might prevent health problems by promoting more adaptive and less maladaptive emotion regulation decisions in the face of stressful events. The present study—a pilot investigation that is the basis for a forthcoming study—tested this hypothesis by examining between- and within-person associations of DT with a repertoire of 12 common emotion regulation strategies. We recruited 25 high-anxiety university students to complete surveys of DT and emotion regulation efforts in response to …

Psychophysiology Of The Stress Response And The Hierarchical Structure Of Emotional Disorders, Molly Penrod Jun 2018

Psychophysiology Of The Stress Response And The Hierarchical Structure Of Emotional Disorders, Molly Penrod

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Physiological stress reactivity is closely linked to emotional disorders like depression and anxiety and is believed to play a causal role in their development. Similar patterns of exaggerated reactivity across a wide range of emotional disorders indicate that physiological hyperreactivity to stress may be a multifinal, or shared, risk factor for these disorders. However, current literature examines stress reactivity in only one or two disorders at a time and is based off categorical classification systems that assume mental disorders to be discrete entities. Recent research into the observed distribution of symptoms of mental illness contests this assumption and proposes that …

Parent And Friend Emotion Socialization As Correlates Of Adolescent Eating Behavior, Margaret Eileen Cameron Apr 2018

Parent And Friend Emotion Socialization As Correlates Of Adolescent Eating Behavior, Margaret Eileen Cameron

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Eating disorders and disordered eating affect about half a million teenagers in the United States. Restrained eating is a type of disordered eating behavior where individuals limit their food intake to avoid weight gain, maintain their current weight, or lose weight. Although researchers have examined numerous predictors of this eating style, there are gaps in the literature related to the role of emotion socialization on restrained eating. Parents and peers continually interact with adolescents; as such, both groups often witness adolescents’ emotion expressivity behaviors. They can respond supportively or unsupportively and these responses contribute to adolescents’ emotion regulation strategies. The …

The Treatment Planning Of Experienced Counselors: A Qualitative Examination, Daniel Gutierrez, Jesse Fox, Kendra Jones, Elizabeth Fallon Jan 2018

The Treatment Planning Of Experienced Counselors: A Qualitative Examination, Daniel Gutierrez, Jesse Fox, Kendra Jones, Elizabeth Fallon

Arts & Sciences Articles

Using consensual qualitative research, the authors examined the treatment planning process of experienced counselors (N = 9). The data analysis resulted in 4 domains: assessment steps, clinical impressions, treatment factors, and treatment strategies. These domains describe the process used by experienced counselors in making clinical decisions and offer insight into the nature of clinical expertise and the need for further research on treatment planning.
