Organized by the Sacred Heart University Office of Volunteer Programs & Service Learning since 1996, Community Connections allows incoming first-year students to provide assistance to agencies and outreach programs across the city. Students work on projects as varied as tending a community garden in a housing project, helping a public school teacher set up her classroom for the first day of school, sorting donations at the Bridgeport Rescue Mission warehouse and building bookshelves for a new home for the Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County. Support groups for parents of children with disabilities are increasing, though not at a rate that may accommodate the burgeoning number of families who are facing hardships. Finding support groups that will meet their needs is a critical part of functioning during a challenging time.
