OLAC Publications and Training Materials
The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines, with examples, for the usage of Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) for moving image materials. These guidelines are intended to complement existing official guidelines. As genre/form practice in general is currently being reviewed by several other committees, these guidelines will need to be revisited in the future; however, these best practices fulfill the need for short-term guidance.

Navigating To Success: Finding Your Way Through The Challenges Of Map Digitization, Cory K. Lampert, Katherine Rankin
Navigating To Success: Finding Your Way Through The Challenges Of Map Digitization, Cory K. Lampert, Katherine Rankin
Library Faculty Presentations
This presentation highlights the key steps and decision points essential to completing a successful map digitization project. Topics to be covered include: overcoming the challenges of scanning large-scale materials (including file sizes and encapsulation), descriptive metadata for map collections, copyright and privacy issues for geographic materials, adding geographic coordinates to map collections, image viewer and interface options for online maps, and methods to track the impact of map digitization with users. Using University of Nevada Las Vegas Libraries’ digital project Southern Nevada: History in Maps as a case study, the authors will discuss the challenges inherent in map digitization and …

Introduction To Resource Description And Access (Rda), Katherine Rankin, Cyrus Zarganj Ford
Library Faculty Presentations
Resource Description and Access or RDA is a set of guidelines and instructions on resource description and access for the cataloging of library materials covering all types of content and media. RDA is the successor to the second edition of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AACR2, the current standard set of cataloging. This new set of cataloging rules was needed to bring together different editions and formats of a work, to fit better with emerging technologies, and to be a better way of cataloging digital materials. This talk is an introduction to RDA.

Keeping Track Of Objects And Metadata At Unlv: From Material Selection Through Metadata Quality Control, Silvia B. Southwick, Jane Skoric
Library Faculty Presentations
Often times a large amount of time is spent in organizing materials and tracking workflow in digital collection projects. Time is a precious resource in most projects since they are constrained by a rigid schedule. This problem is exacerbated in collaborative environments where different people collaborate in various stages of the project. Silvia Southwick and Jane Skoric with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will present effective and efficient simple tools to manage digital objects and metadata throughout the life cycle of a digital collection project. Using actual work processes, we will describe and demonstrate the tracking of physical and …

In 2009, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) charged a task force to update and revise recommendations that address cataloging practice and catalog access to electronic resources for libraries participating in the I-Share union catalog. This article presents the results of a survey and recommendations developed by the 2009 Task Force that cover all types of e-resources. Issues covered include: single or separate records for electronic and print versions of a title; the use of aggregator-neutral and provider neutral records,; the construction and placement of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and notes; and the use of …

Sustainable Collaborations For Opal Depository Collections: Meeting The Needs, Bridging The Gaps, Jane Wu
Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The United States federal government publications were little known and underutilized in the majority of the OPAL (Ohio Private Academic Libraries) depository libraries, as the majority of the collections were not in the online catalog before 1998. The limited financial and human resources of these small academic libraries demanded effective collaboration among the libraries, the commercial vendors and service providers, the local administrations, and the library staff members to automate the collection. However, making collaboration work at operational and strategic levels can be a daunting management challenge.

Creating Collections Through Collaboration: An Innovative Digital Library Project In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Laurie Kutner, Cindy Dykes, Stefanie Havelka
Publications and Research
The proposed presentation will focus on a successful cross-cultural and cross-institutional collaborative model, involving four institutions, that was developed to create digital library collections of research-based information generated in the Monteverde Zone in Costa Rica. Addressing a need for the Monteverde community to have easy access to locally-produced research-based information, the digital collections contain unpublished research documents produced by area international study programs focusing on local sustainable community development, community health, and tropical ecology.
Each summer, since 2008, LIS graduate student interns from Syracuse University have spent 5-6 weeks on site at the Monteverde Institute in Costa Rica, working to …

The Next Level Of Understanding Contentdm, Sierra R. Green
The Next Level Of Understanding Contentdm, Sierra R. Green
Blogging the Library
Hello everyone and Happy Wednesday once again! As promised from my last blog entry, I come to you with new knowledge about CONTENTdm! If you remember from my previous post, I had learned how to input the metadata in the correct fields and organize the folders to be harvested by CONTENTdm. I could upload these digitized Tipton photos and their accompanying metadata for approval (this is the "digitized purgatory" I mentioned last time). But one final step that I did not know how to do was "take down" or delete the old digitized Tipton photos and "put up" the new …

Blogging the Library
Hello everyone and happy Wednesday! I've just emerged from another week in the world of CONTENTdm and I feel like I'm understanding more and more what it likes and what it doesn't like. Thus far, I've added a digitized image of the reverse side of close to 30 Tipton photographs! [excerpt]

Efficient management of metadata is critical for developing quality, sharable metadata. A variety of metadata challenges arise from metadata designed in a project-specific context versus taking a comprehensive metadata management approach applied across multiple digital collections in academic libraries.

Usefulness And Applications Of Data Mining In Extracting Information From Different Perspectives, Jiban K. Pal
Usefulness And Applications Of Data Mining In Extracting Information From Different Perspectives, Jiban K. Pal
Journal Articles
Discusses the concept of data mining, its applications, benefits, and the standard tasks involved in the process. Such pattern-seeking techniques usually performed with a wide range of related areas (viz. statistics, neural networks, genetic algorithms, machine learning, pattern recognition, knowledge-based systems, etc.) are described. Also focuses on bibliomining opportunities to be useful to information retrieval, semantic analysis of unstructured texts, web-usage mining, and making proactive as well as knowledge-driven decisions across library services Suggests the use of data mining in combination with other techniques of evaluation, exploiting large data warehouses by skilled specialists, and advises for ethical uses without privacy …
