Is It Something We Didn't Ask? Examining Our Faculty's Motivation To Use Our University's Ir, Karen Ramsden, Darren Sweeper

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

How can we encourage faculty to deposit their scholarly works in our university’s institutional repository (IR)? What motivates faculty to self-archive, and participate in the IR? The who self-archives question can be easily answered, but the why questions involve more rigor to find answers and create solutions. While there has been considerable attention dedicated to the development, implementation, and the initial population of content into the IR at Montclair State, there has been no data collection used to evaluate the IR, in regards to faculty awareness, and motivation to participate, and continued participation, that can help to strategically influence outreach …

How can we encourage faculty to deposit their scholarly works in our university’s institutional repository (IR)? This is a common question asked by repository managers when building, and populating, an institutional repository on campus. What motivates faculty to self-archive, and to continue their participation in the IR? The who self-archives question can be easily answered by generating reports. The why questions involve more rigor to find answers. A common theme in the literature regarding IRs is that the majority of faculty do not self-archive, with various reasons cited in available literature ranging from lack of awareness about the repository, time …

Librarians as change agents for open science Two of the core values of librarianship include access to information for library users and preservation of knowledge in all forms. Open science aligns with these values and others fundamental to the roles and services of libraries and librarians. With a pragmatic goal of accelerating research progress and advancing scholarship, open science also echoes the mission of the academic and research enterprise. By taking a leading role in open science at their institutions, librarians are harmoniously aligning themselves with their institutional strategies. In this year’s Hunter Forum, panelists will discuss current initiatives in …

A laboratory-safety course has been developed that is designed to introduce first-year graduate students to the array of dangers associated with research in the chemical sciences. We describe the challenges of creating an impactful course that seeks to convey practical laboratory-safety information in a classroom setting for students with a diverse array of interests. In particular, we have found that a flipped-classroom model highlighting case studies creates a concrete experience that actively engages course participants. In addition, the introduction of various pedagogical tools, including active-learning techniques (field trips, role-playing games, and group projects), were triggered in large part by recommendations …

Who Us?: A Government Documents Librarian And A Projects Specialist Collaborate On Establishing An Institutional Repository, Karen Ramsden, Darren Sweeper

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

This talk focuses on how a government documents librarian, with professional experience in social sciences and information literacy and a projects specialist with experience in fundraising and research were thrust into leadership roles for establishing an Institutional Repository at Montclair State University with no prior experience. Our seemingly unrelated backgrounds served us well to bring an essential and much needed service to our university. As “Agents of Change,” we will discuss the process involved for promoting the value of the Repository to administration, faculty and library staff through our own antidotes for success based on our extensive research and collaboration. …

Librarying! How Librarian Expertise Can Assist Student Academic Services To Create Pathways For Student Success, Darren Sweeper, Catherine Baird

Sprague Library Scholarship and Creative Works

This poster will describe how you can position your library as a catalyst in campus-wide partnerships. Stewart C. Baker posits the idea of using “Library” as a verb. Just as we “Google” when the need arises, our students, faculty, and staff need to know how to “Library.”We will describe how we made connections with a variety of campus offices responsible for student success, in particular, the Educational Opportunities Fund Program. By creating new pathways for librarian expertise and the promotion of resources, we introduced these student-focused academic units to “library-ing.” The goal was to enable our colleagues to provide excellent …
