China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment And International Investment Law, Karl P. Sauvant, Michael D. Nolan Nov 2015

China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment And International Investment Law, Karl P. Sauvant, Michael D. Nolan

Karl P. Sauvant

As China’s outward foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown, its approach to international investment agreements (IIAs) has changed. China is now one of the world’s most important outward investors, with Chinese FDI facing widespread criticism. The challenge for China is to adapt to this new configuration of interests stemming from these developments, both in terms of its national policies and the contents of its IIAs. In so doing, it is likely to influence, perhaps significantly, the further evolution of international investment law. This article deals briefly with the salient features of China’s outward FDI and the policies that support it; …

The Political Consequences Of Party System Change, Riccardo Pelizzo, Zim Nwokora Aug 2015

The Political Consequences Of Party System Change, Riccardo Pelizzo, Zim Nwokora

riccardo pelizzo

This article engages one of the important gaps in the literature on party system effects: the consequences of party system change. We discuss how existing empirical approaches to party system change do not actually capture the changeability of patterns of party competition, which is the most direct understanding of the term “party system.” We propose a measure that does exactly this: the index of fluidity. Applying this measure to countries in South East Asia, we show that party system change is associated with harmful effects, including lower foreign direct investment and deterioration of the rule of law

Parole And Probation Officers' Perceptions Of Management Effectiveness In Baltimore County, Maryland, Valencia Tamir Johnson Dr. Aug 2015

Parole And Probation Officers' Perceptions Of Management Effectiveness In Baltimore County, Maryland, Valencia Tamir Johnson Dr.

Valencia T Johnson

Management practices in the rehabilitation and criminal justice system are primarily concerned with how employees sense, collect, organize, and process information regarding the criminal offender. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure parole and probation officers' perceptions regarding management support and effectiveness in the workplace, with particular emphasis on communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. Herzberg's 2-factor theory of motivation served as the theoretical framework for the study, supporting the concept of participatory management as a central factor in job satisfaction. A researcher-designed, Likert-type questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample of 31 parole and probation officers in …

The New Panama Canal In A Global Context, Herman L. Boschken

Herman L. Boschken

Without the "container revolution" (1970-present) and its redesign of seaport and maritime-trade infrastructures, globalization as we know it would not exist. With the recent enlargements of the Panama and Suez Canals, many new implications for U.S. economic trade are unfolding. This presentation at the Commonwealth Club of California, outlines recent changes in world trade and infrastructure development, and poses five factors that will likely determine winners and losers in the unfolding developments of this highly competitive world trade-route system.

Substantial reduction in cascading of taxes is observed for a shift from baseline to alternative scenarios and tax system becomes cleaner. 3. Elimination of cascading of taxes will result in rising export competitiveness of Indian industries in the international markets. 4. In all alternative designs of GST, the prices across the sectors either remain unchanged or decline 5. Dismantling the administered pricing mechanism for petrol and diesel along with introduction of comprehensive GST for petroleum products benefits …

Navigating The Life Cycle Of Trust In Developing Economies: One-Size Solutions Do Not Fit All, Laura Hartman, Julie Gedro, Courtney Masterson Jun 2015

Navigating The Life Cycle Of Trust In Developing Economies: One-Size Solutions Do Not Fit All, Laura Hartman, Julie Gedro, Courtney Masterson

Laura Hartman

Trust is critical to the development and maintenance of collaborative and cohesive relationships in societies, broadly, and in organizations, specifically. At the same time, trust is highly dependent on the social context in which it occurs. Unfortunately, existing research involving trust remains somewhat limited to a particular set of developed economies, providing a window to explore a culture's stage of economic development as a key contextual determinant of trust within organizations. In this article, we review the state of the scholarship on trust and identify those qualities of trust that are common in organizations at similar stages of economic development, …

“The Influence Mix” – Information Access In The New Age And Empowerment Of Consumers ¿Decline Or Reformulation In Branding Development?, Alejandro Castro

Alejandro Castro

The new technological age is changing the rules in marketing. Now consumers are influenced by other sources of information and brands might be losing the battle. Itamar Simonson and Emanuel Rosen state in their book “Absolute Value” that consumers now base their decisions on reviews from other users, opinions and other emerging technologies that are turning choices more rational. Therefore traditional sources of information controlled by marketing are fading. In this article we focus on Brands and we answer the following question ¿Are we before a declining on branding or are we force to implement new marketing strategies for branding …

Donor Coordination In Project Funding: Evidence From A Threshold Public Goods Experiment, Luca Corazzini, Paola Valbonesi, Christopher Cotton May 2015

Donor Coordination In Project Funding: Evidence From A Threshold Public Goods Experiment, Luca Corazzini, Paola Valbonesi, Christopher Cotton

Paola Valbonesi

We present results from an experiment with multiple public goods, where each good produces benefits only if total contributions to it reach a minimum threshold. The presence of multiple public goods makes coordination among participants more difficult, discouraging donor participation and decreasing the likelihood of any public good being effectively funded. Applied to the case of fundraising, the results show how overall donations and the number of effectively funded projects may both decrease as the total number of projects vying for funding increases. The analysis considers whether making one of the contribution options salient, either through its merits or by …

Governance, Business Environment, And Foreign Direct Investments, Riccardo Pelizzo, Omer F. Baris Mar 2015

Governance, Business Environment, And Foreign Direct Investments, Riccardo Pelizzo, Omer F. Baris

riccardo pelizzo

In this paper we investigate the relationship between the quality of governance, the business environment and foreign direct investments. Looking at 49 countries in Africa, we present evidence supporting the claim that the quality of governance does affect the stability of policies and the quality of the business environment. However, our data analysis also reveals that neither the quality of governance nor the quality of the business environment have any impact, at least in Sub-Saharan Africa on the level of FDI.

Incorporating Sustainability Into Principles Of Macroeconomics: A Case Study, Madhavi Venkatesan Jan 2015

Incorporating Sustainability Into Principles Of Macroeconomics: A Case Study, Madhavi Venkatesan

Madhavi Venkatesan

Using grant funded resources, this case study explicitly engaged students in a Principles of Macroeconomics course with respect to the impact of sustainability-based values on economic indicators and standard of living parameters, while coincidentally opening discussion to the implicit nature of consumption-based values in the economic assessment of growth. Student assimilation and reaction to the curriculum was documented over the period of the course. Students provided responses to weekly questionnaires, which tracked their changing perceptions, values, and behaviors. Weekly class discussions and individual student assessment of the awareness fostered by reviewing the two divergent value structures also contributed to qualitative …

Analyzing Business Model And Intellectual Capital Components, Anna Ujwary-Gil Jan 2015

Analyzing Business Model And Intellectual Capital Components, Anna Ujwary-Gil

Anna Ujwary-Gil

The article concerns two management concepts, namely: intellectual capital and business models of the company and is of a theoretical nature. The main assumption of the literary review conducted was to discuss these two constructs in the context of their common elements. Can a business model be analyzed in the context of intellectual capital elements? Or is it possible that intellectual capital components constitute those of a business model? This article attempts to provide an answer to these questions by taking advantage of the latest subject literature, one of key importance to this issue.

Tourism And Employment: The Case Of Togo, Riccardo Pelizzo, Abel Kinyondo Jan 2015

Tourism And Employment: The Case Of Togo, Riccardo Pelizzo, Abel Kinyondo

riccardo pelizzo

This paper sets to investigate whether and to what extent the development of tourism sector in Togo is associated with and possibly responsible for economic growth, employment creation and generation of wealth in the country. Results from this paper shows that the development of tourism in Togo has created both business and employment opportunities and that the expansion of the workforce in this sector has been associated with, and to some extent it has been responsible for, a decline in the unemployment rate in the country. In light of these findings, we recommend that the Togolese government should ensure that …

Does Stronger Patent Protection Increase Export Variety? Evidence From U.S. Product-Level Data, Olena Ivus Jan 2015

Does Stronger Patent Protection Increase Export Variety? Evidence From U.S. Product-Level Data, Olena Ivus

Olena Ivus

Proponents of global intellectual property rights (IPRs) reforms have argued that developing countries' weak IPRs limit their access to foreign innovative products and technologies. Central to our understanding of the effects of IPRs on product access is the influence of national differences in patent protection on corporate behavior and business strategy of multinational firms. Using detailed product data on U.S. exports from 1990 to 2000, this paper assesses the impact of strengthening IPRs in developing countries on product variety of U.S. exports. Colonial origin and cross-industry variation in patent effectiveness serve to identify the impact. The results show that the …

A Burning Question: Does Arson Increase When Local House Prices Decline?, Michael D. Eriksen, James M. Carson Jan 2015

A Burning Question: Does Arson Increase When Local House Prices Decline?, Michael D. Eriksen, James M. Carson

Michael D Eriksen

We construct panel data on house prices and the determined cause of 4.8 million individual fires in the United States between 1986 and 2010 to test whether decreases in local housing market prices coincided with increases in arson. Since some insured homeowners may attempt to disguise the actual cause of fire as accidental, we also examine how decreases in local house prices are associated with changes in the total number of fires and the probability of determined causes of accidental fires. For the sample period, our results suggest that declines in local house prices coincided with increases in arson, the …

[Slides] Resale Price Maintenance In The Age Of Showrooming, Jeanine Miklos-Thal, Greg Shaffer Jan 2015

[Slides] Resale Price Maintenance In The Age Of Showrooming, Jeanine Miklos-Thal, Greg Shaffer

Jeanine Miklos-Thal

We examine the leading pro-competitive justification for RPM, free-riding on dealer services, in today’s context of brick-and-mortar versus online retailing. Market research studies show that many consumers visit a brick-and-mortar store to examine a product and select its features, but then purchase it at a discounted price from an online retailer. An often-voiced concern is that such “showrooming” will discourage traditional retailers from providing demand-enhancing sales services. According to the classic free-riding theory (Telser, 1960), manufacturers can solve this problem by imposing price floors that prevent online retailers from undercutting brick-and-mortar retailers. Counter to this widely used argument, we find …

How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell Jan 2015

How Do Gamblers Maintain And Illusion Of Control?, Elizabeth Cowley, Donnel A. Briley, Colin Farrell

Donnel A Briley

Gamblers' enduring illusions of control (IOC) may be one reason why they continue to gamble in the face of sustained losses. If gamblers persist in the belief that they have special skills, knowledge and other advantages when gambling, they may be able to convince themselves it is worth doing again. Maintaining an IOC requires selective attention of the illusion supporting moments during the construction of an evaluation of a gambling session. Objective: Test the hypothesis that selected moments, specifically the moment of the highest win and the last moment of the gaming session, explain the retrospective evaluation of the session for …

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson Jan 2015

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson

Alan J Richardson

The telegraph was the first practical use of electricity. It revolutionized commercial communication and facilitated the globalization of business. As the telegraph developed as a medium of international communication, regulation was needed to overcome administrative and technical issues, and, importantly, to establish accounting procedures for the distribution of the revenue to multiple national partners. This paper traces the evolution of revenue allocation models through three international organizations that ultimately lead to the creation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1932. The shifts in revenue allocation methods are consistent with a shift in focus of regulation from growth to efficiency …
