One of the unresolved puzzles in the civil resistance and contentious politics literatures relates to the fact that some movements that begin as reformist (seeking redress in a certain policy space) escalate to maximalist claims (demanding the ouster of a national leader or the entire regime) – a process I call “demand escalation.” For instance, in the summer of 2019, thousands took to the streets of Hong Kong to protest a proposed extradition bill that would allow criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party. If conflict onset leads to increases in human rights abuse, how can these abuses be curbed once conflicts have ended? To answer this question, researchers have traditionally focused on a country’s regime type and leaders’ incentive structures. This is insufficient, I argue, because many regimes with obvious incentives to curb repression (especially democracies) fail to do so. In addition to regime-type, therefore, the answer depends on whether a given regime can count on the cooperation of its military and law enforcement institutions, which I refer to collectively as the security apparatus. China’s behavior in the South China Sea challenges widely accepted rules governing maritime jurisdiction worldwide as it tries to expand the limits of its jurisdiction. The systems are separately inadequate and basically uncoordinated, leaving migrants in a precarious situation. This dissertation interrogates the assertion in postcolonial scholarship, especially from the work of Homi Bhabha that the construction and performance of hybrid identities act as a form of resistance for marginalized communities against structures of oppression. While this study supports this assertion, it also critiques how hybridity fails to address issues of unequal power relations. This has led to an uncritical use of hybridity that reproduces the very idea of static identity which its proponents claim to transcend.

Stereotypes And Prejudice: Intergroup Contact Between Americans And Japanese, Masami Ota

The goals of this research were twofold. First, this research investigated the current stereotype content between American and Japanese people. Second, the relationship among orientation (individualism or collectivisim), intergroup friendly contact, and stereotype and prejudice variability was assessed. Results showed that both Americans and Japanese have positive stereotypes of each other, with Americans selecting the trait "intelligent" as the most common descriptor of Japanese people, and Japanese selecting the trait "pleasure-loving" the most common descriptor of Americans.
