Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy stipends were used to support the formation of a Faculty Learning Community to develop a new course, LAS 2000. Five faculty members from the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences collectively designed and produced an fully online, team taught semester course. LAS 2000 is an introductory course to Latin American Studies, a requirement in the LAS Minor Program. As concern over hate speech grows into a global issue (Haraszti 2012), a recurring question confronting every democratic society is how it should restrict discriminatory speech without infringing upon the universally accepted principle of free speech. Japan’s recent experience in coping with growing hate speech presents a valuable case study. Drawing on the plays and musicals of the 2018-2019 Broadway season, this thesis examines how theatre responds to the sociocultural, economic, and political conditions of society. Sociologists have largely overlooked theatre’s cultural influence, but Broadway productions act as social reflection by reproducing the conversations and inequalities of their context. Access to Broadway is limited, in various manners, by socioeconomic class, race, gender, ability, and age. As conversations about equity expand and audiences increasingly demand diversified representation, Broadway begins to shed the restraints of its conventions. In many regards, the recent changes fail in meaningfully transforming the Broadway institution. Those who …
