A Study Of The Speech Philosophy Of Alexander Campbell And The Application Of That Philosophy, Rudy L. Morrow Sep 1973

A Study Of The Speech Philosophy Of Alexander Campbell And The Application Of That Philosophy, Rudy L. Morrow

Dissertations and Theses

A great religious Awakening was taking place in 1805 until the end of the Civil War. Religious debates became the order of the day, and were at least equal in importance to the political debates. Alexander Campbell was one of the leading debators of the period. He was born September 12, 1787, in Ireland, but moved to America in 1809, settling in western Virginia. In 1812, Alexander and his father, Thomas Campbell, launched what they called "The Restoration Movement", in which they were seeking for the unity of all Christians on the basis of the Bible.

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett Jun 1973

Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory : A Definition Of Woman By Julia Ward Howe, Gayle Ann Gullett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although neglected by historians Julia Ward Howe contributed much more to American civilization than the words of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic." She was one of the founders of women's clubs and a prominent member of the women suffrage movement. At the turn of the century, Mrs. Howe was nearly a household name. She was eulogized at her death in 1910 as "the most distinguished woman in America." Mrs. Howe was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a distinction not shared by another woman until 1930.

Several biographies have been written on the …

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman Jan 1973

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …

The Economic Development Of Moab, Utah, Gary W. Booher Jan 1973

The Economic Development Of Moab, Utah, Gary W. Booher

Theses and Dissertations

Moab, located in southeastern Utah, began as an agricultural village, in accordance with the economy of early Utah. However, Moab's growth was limited by a restricted physical site. The purpose of this study is to trace the development of the economic functions of Moab in relation to its resource base. Despite the physical limitations of the area, agriculture remained the chief economic activity up to the mid-twentieth century. Periodic booms in speculative mining were only temporary and not significant to the permant economy of the community.

However, in the 1950s, a spectacular uranium boom brought unprecedented growth to the town. …

The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets Jan 1973

The Indian Captivity Narrative: An American Genre, Richard Van Der Beets

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The vast body of Indian captivity narratives is known mostly to historians, anthropologists, and collectors of Americana. In the rare instances where informed scholarship has turned its attention to the narratives, emphasis has been upon the historical and cultural rather than the literary value of the tales. The Indian captivity narrative has been most commonly viewed as but a thread in the loose fabric of American cultural history, consisting of several "popular," sub-literary genres shaped and differentiated largely by the society for which the narratives were intended. The intention in this study is not so much to overturn that view …

The Divided Consciousness In Charles Dickens' Hard Times, Earl Paul Seymour Jan 1973

The Divided Consciousness In Charles Dickens' Hard Times, Earl Paul Seymour

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

What I shall do in this paper is apply Frye’s concept of romance to Hard Times, i.e., Frye's defining romance as a device for using archetypes. The novel, as Frye sees it, is a vehicle whereby “realism” or life-like representation is applied. Hard Times contains “stylized figures” which thematically and formalistically support the dehumanization concept Dickens is portraying. Thus Dickens turned, as it were, toward a potentially revolutionary form within which to accomodate what is in many ways his most original piece of writing.

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise Jan 1973

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The essential problem of politics are ancient general, and persistent. A particular political system, such as that of the United States, can be interpreted as a way of coping with recurring problems. Some of the ways a political system deals with problems may be unique, some commonplace. Because it meets its problems in a particular time and place with a special body of past experiences to go on, each political system is unique; so too the American system is unique. But because some problems have recurred ever since civilized men have tried to live together, every political system has had …

Frontier Consuls: Americans In British Columbia And The Yukon, 1880-1906, Clyde William Tucker Jan 1973

Frontier Consuls: Americans In British Columbia And The Yukon, 1880-1906, Clyde William Tucker

All Master's Theses

Many of the important questions whose resolution shaped twentieth century Canadian-American relations developed out of real or imagined conflicts of interest in the Pacific region during the latter part of the ninteenth century. The United States had no diplomatic representation in Canada, but consuls in British Columbia and the Yukon kept the Department of State well informed of developments which affected American interests. With emphasis on the period between 1880 and 1906, this paper describes the roles played by the consuls in the definition of problems that arose from disputes over boundaries, resource use, smuggling and extradition.

A Comparison Of Incarcerated And Non-Incarcerated Women Based On The M.M.P.I., Rose Marie Carter Jan 1973

A Comparison Of Incarcerated And Non-Incarcerated Women Based On The M.M.P.I., Rose Marie Carter

Masters Theses

The field for research on women offenders provides an extensive opportunity for scientific investigation. Many writers (Gibbons, 1971; Cunningham, 1964; Sutherland, 1968) have discussed the causes of crime and their resulting social implications. Organized mass presentations of the movement of crime among women is negligible. Today female incarcerates make up approximately 11 per cent (Lerner, 1972) of the total number in state and federal penitentiaries. Previous research (Cunningham, 1964) on female felons found poor self-concept, excessive dependency and pathological emotionality to be a consistent pattern in women criminals. Other research (Apfeldorf, 1971; Guze, 1959) found criminal and non-criminal groups could …

Chinese Attitudes And Knowledge Concerning Social Services: A Survey Of The Portland Chinese Community, Laura Lum Sing, Wendy Po-Kow Chan, Peter Tau-Ping Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The professional social worker needs to understand, wide social issues, including the culture and cultural background of minority persons and groups in the United States. One minority group with which social work has not much contact, and thus has little knowledge about, is the Chinese. Regarding professional social work knowledge about minority groups, the Chinese could be considered a "silent minority."
