We’Ve Got You Covered! Using An Umbrella Approach For Research And Beam To Build Student Research Papers: How Library Instruction And English Composition Classes Lay The Foundation For Information Literacy And Research Skills, Samantha Mcneilly, Amy Locklear

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

The Library and English instructors have typically utilized traditional ‘one-shot’ sessions to introduce students in Composition classes to the library databases and other resources available to them. Typically, there is little discussion as to how to formulate research strategies other than using keywords and Boolean operators in the search boxes of the various databases. Librarians expect the English instructors to prepare their students ahead of time on how to formulate keywords that will be used during their research. While most writing instructors are familiar with how to conduct research, they may not spend much time on teaching how to conduct …

Future Trends In Information Literacy Instruction: Lessons Learned From 13 Libraries, Kirsten N. Dean

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

In response to fresh mandates for proof of our library’s impact on student success, we are reformulating the instruction program at the Clemson University Libraries. Rather than racing forward with shots in the dark, we conscientiously chose to set aside time for research and planning. This presentation reports on the process and results of this first stage. I will start by reporting findings and identifying trends from my interviews with instruction librarians at thirteen academic libraries—a mix of peer institutions from our regional consortium and “model” institutions whose achievements in information literacy education have been recognized by the ACRL. I …

Explaining Dynamic Interactions In Wiki-Based Collaborative Writing, Mimi Li, Wei Zhu Aug 2016

Explaining Dynamic Interactions In Wiki-Based Collaborative Writing, Mimi Li, Wei Zhu

Department of Writing and Linguistics Faculty Research and Publications

This article reports a case study that examined dynamic patterns of interaction that two small groups of ESL students exemplified when they performed two writing tasks, i.e., Research Proposal (Task 1) and Annotated Bibliography (Task 2) in a wiki site. Group A demonstrated a Collective pattern in Task 1, but switched to an Active/Withdrawn pattern in Task 2. In contrast, Group B exhibited a Dominant/Defensive pattern in Task 1, but switched to a Collaborative one in Task 2. These patterns were substantiated by group members’ ongoing task approaches in terms of “equality” and “mutuality,” reflected via the analyses of language …

The Importance Of Music Festivals: An Unanticipated And Underappreciated Path To Identity Formation, Kimberly F. Rudolph Jun 2016

The Importance Of Music Festivals: An Unanticipated And Underappreciated Path To Identity Formation, Kimberly F. Rudolph

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this study is to understand and explain the growing popularity of music and art festivals around the world. Music festivals are events consisting of a variety of bands and musical artists performing shows, on numerous stages, over a period of days to a large audience in outside and inside venues. Through field research, participant-observation, personal interviews, and survey research at the 2015 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, this study suggests that they are much more than simple entertainment venues. Because humans desire to belong and music functions in the capacity as a global language, music festivals are …

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian Apr 2016

Racial Influences On The Perception Of Police, Sam Omelian

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Previous research has found racial background is a significant factor for the perception of police. However, there is little research done on the impact of the race of the police officer on the perceptions of police. This study examined the impact of racial influences on the perception of police. To study this, we used vignettes of a violent police citizen encounter, in which the officer's use of force was justified, unjustified, or ambiguous. Participants were randomly assigned to instructions, in which the police officer was identified as White or African American. Through self-report surveys, participants rated their perception of the …

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le Apr 2016

Repetition And Formatting In Medication Instructions, Jessica Le

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Comprehension of pictures and text in health-related materials like medication instructions and pamphlets plays a critical role in health outcomes. Understanding the materials can help promote information integration, information recall, medication adherence, and improved health communication. Existing research that address the effects of repetition in pictures and text have been in other contexts such as object assembly. It shows that repetitious multimedia results in better free recall and accuracy and response times in order verification (BrunyÌ© et al., 2008). Research also suggests that there is better recall for pictures integrated with the text than separated (Johnson & Mayer, 2012). However, …

Psychopathy, Empathy, And Prosocial Helping: Can You Increase Altruistic Helping For Individuals High In Psychopathy?, Courtney Beussink

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

Psychopathy is a disorder encompassing a distinct set of interpersonal, affective, and behavioral traits including lack of empathy and remorse, manipulativeness, callousness, selfishness, antisocial lifestyle, impulsivity, aggressiveness, and social deviance. It is estimated that approximately 15-25% of incarcerated individuals and 0.6-1% of individuals within the community are high in psychopathy (Coid, Yang, Ullrich, Roberts, & Hare, 2009; Hare, 2003). Since psychopathic traits are linked with deviant behavioral outcomes and the prevalence rates are relatively high within forensic and community populations, interventions designed to target the core personality deficits and reduce psychopathic tendencies are needed. The current study seeks to induce …

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh Apr 2016

Influence Of Game Stimuli On Participant Snacking, Emily Welsh

GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium

In 2003 the Pew Research Center conducted a study which found the 70% of college students play some form of electronic game (video, computer, internet) (Jones, 2003), and it is our belief that this data has only increased with the iPhone take-over that took place in 2007. In 2015 the CDC reported that nearly 35% of adults in the United States are considered overweight or obese, and has been found to be a key influence in the onset Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other health concerns, to include mental illness in the form of depression, high anxiety, and …

Colaboratory: Design Collaboration For The Greater Good, Stephanie Arends Neal Jan 2016

Colaboratory: Design Collaboration For The Greater Good, Stephanie Arends Neal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A university campus is comprised of countless students enrolled in an array of degree programs that logistically creates a diverse population that can and should culminate into a dynamic professional network for graduates. How can higher education capitalize on this melting pot to provide experiences for students and fuse this network? A place, where students collectively solve problems by applying knowledge from their degree-specific areas, will foster interdisciplinary collaboration. By requiring working-relationships between students that benefit their community, a design center will provide students with experiences across disciplines that mirror a real-world, collaborative work environment while they identify opportunities and …
