El Sindicato De Las Costureras 19 De Septiembre: The Impact Of The 1985 Mexico City Earthquake On Social Process, Margaret Mccrea
Dissertations and Theses
The paper traces out the relationships between three sets of actors--workers, factory owners, and government--before, during and after the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, and places those relationships in the broader context of Mexico's political and economic development, as well as the spatial structure of Mexico City and the garment district. The paper concludes that although victims respond to the crisis by attempting to restore and repair previous social and physical conditions, as social theory predicts, disasters have different effects on different classes of people, who respond according to their needs, vulnerabilities, perceptions, values, and their socially prescribed powers. Where there …
American Foreign Policy: The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas
American Foreign Policy: The Utility Of Force As An Influence, Bargaining, Or Coercive Force In The Caribbean Basin, Susan M. Marandas
Dissertations and Theses
Throughout history states have pursued both cooperative and power-oriented strategies. Moralists and realists have long questioned the appropriateness of using force to gain state objectives. Recent analysts have stressed that states have a moral duty to manage international uncertainty in the best interests of their citizens. While this might involve utilizing both power-seeking and order-seeking strategies, it has been suggested that pursuing order-seeking strategies could help alleviate international uncertainty.
An historical survey, as well as recent case studies in Grenada and Nicaragua, indicate that the United States often has relied upon military strategies in the Caribbean Basin. The United States …

A Study-Support Program For High-Risk, Black College Freshman Enrolled In A General Psychology Course, Angela Michelle Williams
A Study-Support Program For High-Risk, Black College Freshman Enrolled In A General Psychology Course, Angela Michelle Williams
Masters Theses
As a replication of Jackson's (1984) work, this research compared the performance of three groups of college freshmen. The groups consisted of black, high-risk students who voluntarily enrolled in a study-support group because of their initial quiz scores. The support program required the students to study each week's psychology objectives in four smaller segments, rather than studying all the week's material at once. The assumption was that this would increase the students' contact with the study material and improve their performances. An ABA design was used. The participants in the support program received higher quiz scores and final grades than …

Southern Baptist Convention Media Missions In Africa: Cross-Cultural Communications In A Pluralistic Environment, Ian Robert Cosh
Southern Baptist Convention Media Missions In Africa: Cross-Cultural Communications In A Pluralistic Environment, Ian Robert Cosh
Honors Theses
The purpose for research was to analyze and synthesize the accomplishments of the Southern Baptist Convention's media missions work in Africa and to document the essence, magnitude and complexity of the task facing media missionaries in Africa. Research conducted by the writer at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in June 1986 revealed that the formal study of media missions is comparatively new, and therefore not well documented. Much of the up-to-date information available is in the form of audio cassette tapes and video recordings. Research papers written by students at the seminary, within the past two years, frequently cite sources at …
The Paradoxical Relationship: Evangelical Christian Church-State Relations In The Soviet Union, Rhonda Clark
The Paradoxical Relationship: Evangelical Christian Church-State Relations In The Soviet Union, Rhonda Clark
Honors Theses
Throughout the history of the Soviet state, its leaders have dealt with the question of Christian evangelical religion in varying manners utilizing anti-religious propaganda, legislation, and interpretation of this legislation. Dealing with religion in terms of balancing ideology versus practicality has always been a complex question for these leaders. Since the Stalin era, the state has utilized a system of registration to control the church. This registration produced a paradoxical leadership role for those in charge of the registered churches.
In the past thirty years, these recognized leaders of registered groups have been a liaison between church and state, a …

German-Czech Conflict In Cisleithania : The Question Of The Ethnographic Partition Of Bohemia, 1848-1919, Nicholas Aldorde
Dissertations and Theses
Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, the former Crownlands of Austria-Hungary which now make up the western half of Czechoslovakia, had for centuries a population mixture of 40% German, 60% Czech. The national reawakening of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries pitted the majority Czechs against their German minority master. This, coupled with the social upheavals caused by the industrial revolution, brought Czechs and Germans in Bohemia to center stage in the nationality conflict in the multinational Empire.

The Development Of Rhythm In Young Children Aged One To Four Years, Davidah Koseff
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this study was to assess how young children between the ages of one and four years develop rhythm skills. The project was a pilot study conducted at 11 preschools and day care centers in Stockton, California, and included 60 children. Thirty behaviors comprised the test of various aspects of rhythmic performance. The children were video-taped and the tapes were then analyzed. By examining how many children in a particular age group could perform a particular task, a sequence became apparent. This body of research can now be used as a basis for further studies with the aim …
The Experience Of Public Art In Urban Settings, Roberta Degnore
The Experience Of Public Art In Urban Settings, Roberta Degnore
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The sine qua non for an artwork in the urban realm is neither its judged "goodness" nor the ability of audiences to perceive it "correctly," but is the total experience the work contributes to as part of the fabric of interlocking meanings that places have in people's lives.
In urban settings, the physical attributes and private intentionality of a work do not stand alone. As carefully as an artist installs his/her pieces in a gallery, the same concern for their working together and with their total environment must be applied to artworks in complex public settings, where choice to be …

From 1972 to 1986, the educational work of the Adventist church in Taiwan has declined steadily. This study was to investigate the attitudes of church members toward the support of Adventist education on relation to demographic and personal variables.
Method. The Adventist Christian Education Attitude Scale measured (1) demographic characteristics; (2) 59 attitude statements, arranged in five scales, identified by factor analysis; and (3) the 13 reasons why church members did not attend or send their youth …

This study identified and analyzed the influence the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had on the decision of 309 respondents to exercise. The data obtained from the questionaires were analyzed using chi-square to compare males and females. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were justified: women were more influenced by the LDS Church to exercise than men; LDS males and females exercised more than average American adults; walking, jogging, and aerobic dance were the most popular choices of LDS exercisers; and, there is a need to improve the awareness of LDS members concerning the Physical …

Mormons In Victorian England, Jan G. Harris
Mormons In Victorian England, Jan G. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study of the members of the Manchester Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1838 – 1860. It is a social examination of the converts and reveals that Manchester Mormons were prototypes of many members who joined the Church throughout England.
Most Mormons were young, and were baptized in their twenties or early thirties. Many were single. The Mormon congregation was representative of the working class citizenry of town. Almost all worked with their hands. Living conditions varied. Some members were affluent by working class standards and some barely survived. However, the …
