Pestering Staff Into Online Learning: An Integrated Plan, H. J. Jones

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Universities are striving to provide quality learning experiences for their diverse student population and online learning is one aspect of this changing environment. This paper notes barriers that have been recognised that impede faculty uptake of online learning and examines some of the strategies that can be implemented to overcome these barriers. A plan for integrated implementation of online learning is proposed which consists of Planning & Promotion, Education, Support, Training, Encouragement and Recognition & Reward (PESTER). The elements of the plan are described in detail and an example of an implementation plan is provided.

The ALTC Exchange (formerly the Carrick Exchange), is a national repository and networking service for Australian higher education. The Exchange was designed to provide access to a repository of shared learning and teaching resources, work spaces for team members engaged in collaborative projects, and communication and networking services. The Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) established the Exchange for those who teach, manage and lead learning and teaching in higher education. As part of the research conducted to inform the development of the Exchange, models for peer review of educational resources were evaluated. For this, a design-based research approach was …

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The New Technologies: New Pedagogies Project is a nationally funded project to support the use of mobile learning in higher education to support student learning. We explore the staff development process of this larger project, where academics in a Faculty of Education investigate new pedagogies that are required to meet the needs of millennial learners. The staff development process addressed the need for staff to own and use mobile technology in their professional and personal contexts in order to think differently about engaging their students in pedagogically sound ways. We identified four key actions for participants which contributed significantly to …

This large-scale study into the recognition, enhancement and development of sessional teaching in higher education builds on the Australian Universities Teaching Committee Report (2003a) Training, Support and Management of Sessional Teaching Staff. The aim of the current Project was to identify and analyse current national practice and refocus attention on the issues surrounding sessional teachers in the university sector. The Project had three objectives: to establish the extent of the contribution that sessional teachers make to higher education; to identify and analyse good practice examples for dissemination; and to consider the possible developments for institutional and sector-wide improvements to the …

The Casualisation Of Teaching And The Subject At Risk, Alisa Percy, Rosemary Beaumont Jan 2008

The Casualisation Of Teaching And The Subject At Risk, Alisa Percy, Rosemary Beaumont

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The casualisation of teaching in Australian higher education has come to be problematised as a risk to the quality of teaching and learning. However, the potential and location of risk, and therefore what constitutes an appropriate institutional intervention, requires interrogation as universities comply with the various regulations that, on the one hand, legitimise further casualisation in the name of flexibility, and on the other, insist on institutional responsibilities in the performance of quality. Taking a critical approach to risk consciousness, this paper examines the way casualisation is produced through workplace reform and problematised as a danger to the student learning …

Developing Academic Literacy In Context, Emily Rose Purser, Jan Skillen, Mary Deane, James Donohue, Kelly Peake

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Where, when and how (indeed whether) academic writing should be taught to university students, who are not necessarily aiming to study ‹language› per se, has long been a concern in higher education. While students need to develop high level communication skills, in genres often quite specific to higher education, in order that their learning can be assessed, teaching them academic writing during the course of their disciplinary studies raises a number of pedagogical, organisational and research issues. This paper reports on a collaboration between a group of academics in different geographic and institutional locations, who share a dream of improving …

Zinc Violet, Case Studies In The Use Of Advanced Teaching Tools In Widely Different Settings, I. A. Kreis, G. S. Leonardi, G. Zielhuis, L. Heijke, Ray Stace

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The development of advanced teaching tools using simulation is costly and often of limited value to the institution developing it. The investment can only be regained if the teaching tool can be used in other places and/or a wide range of applications. Thus the objective is to assess the usefulness of an advanced teaching tool in a range of settings and cultures. Zinc Violet is a simulation of a problem using real data and data analysis software, characters, reports, literature, role-play and financial or time limitations. The students are placed in a problem that they have to solve where their …

Far From Common: Innovative Approaches To Designing Information Rich Learning And Research Spaces, Helen E. Mandl, Margie H. Jantti

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The University of Wollongong Library commenced the new academic year with a state of the art complex designed to attract and welcome students, staff and visitors to a new range of lightfilled study and social places. The Library in its current form, is a significant departure from the original three-storey building which was colloquially known as The Bunker. Built in the 1970’s it was typical of the brutalist architectural style. The reconstruction of the Library extension during 2007 enabled the deconstruction of traditional approaches to facilities design. Cognisant of the proliferation of group work within the curriculum and demand for …

Elastic Practice In Academic Developers, Anna L. Carew, Geraldine E. Lefoe, M. Bell, L. Armour

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The academic developer’s role is the focus of a growing body of literature. This paper builds the literature by arguing the importance to our current practice of making our theoretical underpinnings explicit. We excise and describe fragments of practice from the work of individual academic developers in order to discuss and consider the relationship between particular theories of academic development and particular approaches that these theories support. The three fragments of academic development practice we detail are related to reflective practice, collegiality and the scholarship of teaching. We also provide a fourth, more fulsome description of an approach to illustrate …

Arctic And Outback--Indigenous Literature At The 'Ends Of The Earth.', K. L. Mcmahon-Coleman Jan 2008

Arctic And Outback--Indigenous Literature At The 'Ends Of The Earth.', K. L. Mcmahon-Coleman

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Canada and Australia share a colonial history which featured an attempt to eradicate Indigenous spirituality and language and which involved governmental intervention in areas such as health and education. The movement across traditional borders in order to access health and education created a kind of intra-national diasporic condition, which Indigenous peoples in these countries continue to negotiate on a daily basis.

The Inuit writer Alootook Ipellie and Murri writer Sam Watson seek to resist cultural constraints through creating works which are multiply transgressive. Their works cross genre boundaries and use the interstices between Indigenous diaspora, queer theory and maban reality …

Textual Engagement Of A Different Kind?, Meeta Chatterjee Jan 2008

Textual Engagement Of A Different Kind?, Meeta Chatterjee

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Plagiarism, a complex and contested issue related to engaging with texts, has deservedly received considerable research attention in recent times. However, there is more to integrating academic reading into writing than the issue of plagiarism. Through the voices of others, writers negotiate their position in their discourse community, align themselves to the epistemological value systems of discipline(s) and adopt appropriate stances. This has to be done in ways that are acceptable to the discipline and calls for appropriate engagement with previous studies and the reader. A fine balancing act is expected of a doctoral thesis: the right mix of humility …

In this part of the world they have another thing, they say taisez-vous, or shut up, or shut it, and they say it as they are talking, they are talking along about something and they say, oh shut it, and it is not to themselves, nor to you, it is of the facts of which they are speaking, sometimes they say taisez-vous, taisez-vous, and the sentence goes on, it is rather delightful, I do not quite know why, they may say and the war is long and the Germans might be coming this way again oh shut up oh shut …
