"Finding the Sound: The Women of El Paso Punk Rock", is a a presentation by Dr. Tara López, Assistant Professor and Director of the Ethnic Studies program. In López's talk, she will shed light on how women of the El Paso punk rock scene—particularly the Chicanas that dominated punk in the mid-1990s—used music to develop a fierce set of sonic expressions and innovations. By exploring opportunities available in this popular format, López invites us to reconsider how the messages that comprise these "musicworlds" illuminate the wide array of Chicanas engaged in the El Paso punk scene. In the last 50 years political discourse that surrounds women of color (WOC) has changed in numerous ways. There has been an at times slow and at other times fast rise in the assertion that WOC in political movements are radical and even dangerous, and that their stances threaten American democracy. However, my research will look at how the erasure of contributions and actions of WOC in the past has impacted the direct and focused dialogue of today.

This panel explores how the lover’s leap narrative and its representation of Native American figures has been used to forge distinctive visions of public memory both in and beyond Winona, Minnesota. For most, details of the lover’s leap are reduced to Wenonah’s fatal action, specifically how she protested her family’s rigid customs of arranged marriage by jumping to her death from a bluff atop the Mississippi River. The goal of this panel is to offer a fuller account of the purposes this story has served in popular memory and the implications of its persistence for different audiences, past and present. …

The Trettor Project: Queer History zine shares LGBTQIA+ history through the photography of selected items from the Jean Nickolaus-Tretter Archive of Queer History. The Tretter Archive is located at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The zine was provided with permission of the artist and publisher Laura Migliorino. An art exhibit of the photographs was exhibited in the Winona State University Darrell W. Krueger Library October 2023 through December 2023.

Globalization and internationalization of higher education have perpetuated the dominance of English as the language of production and reproduction in doctoral education. English dominance considers the status of English as a lingua franca in academia. Multilingual students for whom English is not the first language must engage in complex language and writing practices to meet university and publication standards, globally. As writing is identity work, students must negotiate thought and writing in two or more languages to achieve meaningful self-expression and to represent authentic, authoritative voices in English.
