Parent Strategies For Antiracist Parenting In Families Of Multiracial And Asian Descent, Matlida Tavares
Parent Strategies For Antiracist Parenting In Families Of Multiracial And Asian Descent, Matlida Tavares
Doctoral Dissertations
The Pew Research Center’s analysis of United States census data depicts and increasing number of individuals identifying as more than one race. From 2010 to 2020, the population had nearly doubled to 13.5 million. This is particularly evident in states with large populations of Asian American communities such as California, where nearly two million people identify as multiracial and people identifying as both White and Asian making up the largest portion of the 61% increase the state saw since 2010 (Henderson, 2022). Despite claims that an increase in multiracial individuals signifies an end of racism, multiracial children, navigating complex ethnic …
Knowledge Production And The Unthinkable: Weaving Stories Of Art, Gender, And Land, Christin Huntsman
Knowledge Production And The Unthinkable: Weaving Stories Of Art, Gender, And Land, Christin Huntsman
Master's Theses
Colonialism is deeply and violently embedded in Western knowledge formation—dominant power structures produce epistemes that uphold and perpetuate colonial narratives. This kind of knowledge production forecloses other possibilities. Western discourse of truth becomes universalized to the point that other worldviews, other knowledges that do not conform to hegemonic norms, are suppressed or silenced. This thesis examines three areas of hegemony and erasure: art, gender, and land. First, the history of art clearly marks a delineation between Western elitist artistic masterpieces and non-Western ethnographic artifacts. Eurocentrism of art in the academy determines what counts as art and how art is categorized. …

Sport As A Means Of Emancipation: A Global Feminist Perspective, Exploring The Case Study Of Sahrawi Athlete Inma Zanoguera, Olivia Alexandre
Master's Theses
This thesis explores how sport can serve as an effective means of emancipation against intersecting forms of oppression, framed in the colonial context of Western Sahara. Through the case study of Sahrawi athlete and activist Inma Zanoguera, this research examines the emancipatory potential of athletics at the intersection of feminism, decolonization and the pursuit of self-determination.
Chronicling the multidimensional journey of Inma Zanoguera, her narrative becomes the vehicle of a bigger message : How athletic pursuits provide a platform for subverting entrenched systems of patriarchal, racial and political oppression. As Zanoguera states, "I believe in the power of sports to …

Master's Theses
In contemporary society, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for advocacy and activism. This thesis explores the potential of Instagram in raising awareness and fostering dialogue around workplace equity for women in Belgium. Inspired by influential women's advocacy accounts, I embarked on a journey to fill a noticeable gap in the digital landscape – the absence of Belgian-centric content addressing workplace empowerment for women. Grounded in the unique intersections of Belgian national policies, European Union directives, and global socio-economic dynamics, this capstone delves into the multifaceted challenges faced by Belgian women in the workplace.
Through critical historical analysis …
Supporting South Korea’S Aging Population: How Ai And Iot Acceptance Connects The Young And Old, Bobby Im
Supporting South Korea’S Aging Population: How Ai And Iot Acceptance Connects The Young And Old, Bobby Im
Master's Projects and Capstones
In 2024, South Korea surpassed every other nation by becoming the country with the lowest fertility rate (below 0.7%). Population decline will hinder future ability to care for their aging population and although the government and private corporations are investing millions of dollars on developing Artificial Intelligence-Internet of Things (AI-IoT) devices to support the aging, the acceptance levels and the amount of family support required is undervalued. By examining AI-IoT’s current use and role in South Korea’s public health system this paper shows how intergenerational support helps optimize existing procedures and equipment, increases the level of acceptance and use, and …
Leveling Up Financial Literacy: Evidence From Game-Based Intervention With Aspiration Treatment Amongst Rural Women In India, Akash Shaji
Master's Theses
In India, rural women exhibit notably low financial literacy levels, necessitating effective and scalable educational interventions. Our randomized controlled trial evaluated a novel approach, combining game-based financial literacy education with a video documentary-based aspirations intervention, targeting women in self-help groups in Karnataka. The study included 348 participants and employed an ANCOVA model adjusted for clustering to analyze the effects. The results demonstrate significant improvements in financial literacy and aspirations, particularly when interventions are combined. The game-based intervention alone significantly enhanced digital literacy, financial confidence, and behavioral indices such as agency, pathways, and aspirations. The aspirations intervention also independently affected financial …
Taking The Bang Out Of The Gang: The Impact Of Catholic Schools On Gang Homicides In El Salvador, Ann Jillian Villanueva Adona
Taking The Bang Out Of The Gang: The Impact Of Catholic Schools On Gang Homicides In El Salvador, Ann Jillian Villanueva Adona
Master's Theses
This study explores the impact of Catholic presence on homicide rates in El Salvador, specifically focusing on the role of Catholic schools in reducing violence in gang-afflicted municipalities. Analyzing municipality-level data from various years, I used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Instrumental Variable (IV) regressions to study the association between school enrollment and homicide rates. Results show that higher enrollment in Catholic schools is linked to a reduction in homicide rates in gang-affected areas, contrasting with an increase in homicides for non-religious schools. This research sheds light on the importance of investing in Catholic education as a strategy for violence …
Shaping Pacific Islander Identities In The Diaspora: Using E-Talanoa To Strengthen Transnational Ties, Lorna M. Probasco
Shaping Pacific Islander Identities In The Diaspora: Using E-Talanoa To Strengthen Transnational Ties, Lorna M. Probasco
Master's Projects and Capstones
Pacific Islanders have engaged in transnationalism since the time of their early voyages. Ancient wayfinders first learned to read the stars and swells to cross the ocean for a myriad of reasons: trade, opportunity, education, adventure, and more. Today, our borders have stretched beyond those of the Pacific Ocean, from the far reaches of Australia to the corners of Alaska, and yet we still maintain these transnational bonds with our ethnic homelands. One such way we foster these ties and build cultural competency is through talanoa.
Talanoa, a pan-Pacific speech genre, is more than just a form of communication. It …

Quiet Quitting Or Just Tired As Hell?: Embracing The Challenging Reality Of Work-Life Balance As A Black Woman In Academia, Wyletta Gamble-Lomax
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
Quiet quitting is a phenomenon that has swept the globe as result of burnout and apathy in the work environment. The result of deeper issues causes some employees to disengage in the professional environment. After reflection, there was a personal realization that quiet quitting was not my issue, but instead I was tired of the juggling act required for maintaining a healthy work-life balance in academia. Three practical approaches to implement when explicitly and intentionally dealing with the challenge of work-life balance in academia, particularly as a Black woman are (1) learning to say no, (2) establishing healthy boundaries, and …

Erasure And Resistance: Dyeing For Black And Brown Lives, Mary Rambaran-Olm
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
As a scholar of pre-Conquest England, I was faced with the challenge of being both invisible and hyper-visible. The mental and physical toll this takes on racialized scholars in predominantly white fields is immense, which leads to many of us leaving. This track explores my departure from academia, how Black people in history and in academia are often erased and how fiber arts is utilized as a form of resistance. Resistance of hegemony and white supremacy can come in ways we least expect. Accordingly, this track examines how fiber arts has served as a form of liberation and helped me …

Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
“The 10th Amendment: The Preclusion of an Equal Education,” scrutinizes how the Tenth Amendment impacts the U.S. public education system. The study argues that the decentralized nature of education policy inadvertently perpetuates educational disparities, despite historical milestones like Brown v. Board of Education. The study actively explores systemic challenges, including uneven resource allocation, disciplinary practices, and culturally insensitive staffing. It contends that the Tenth Amendment's delegation of educational governance necessitates a fundamental constitutional shift to rectify these issues. Advocating for collective action, the study actively proposes a comprehensive reimagining of public education, emphasizing equity, representation, and resource allocation. The abstract …

We inquire about how a conference session co-facilitator (Nate) and an audience member (JB) negotiated, experienced, and built relationships across their positionalities and roles in the (un)conference space. We interpreted themes from our dialogue, post-session conversations, converged lived experiences, intercollegiate exchanges, symposium planning agendas, and written notes. The three themes, Convergent Social Localities, …

Black female educators, although disproportionately represented within U.S. public schools, face intense and challenging working environments throughout various teaching workforces. While navigating through school environments cultivated of racialized harm, forced compliance, lack of support for Black students, uncomfortable situations, taking on extra roles and duties, challenges, and anti-Blackness, Black educators’ pedagogical experiences are shaped through their identities and teacher experiences- some that were altered from various encounters. Through asking questions, we highlight four Black women educators' experiences in school settings, their engagement with disservice, and their perspectives. Utilizing collaborative autoethnography as a qualitative method, this study allowed researchers to work …

School climate is a complex system involving norms, goals, values, relationships, practices and organizational structures. It includes the composition of the school and school practices. School composition encompasses the social and economic characteristics of a school, whereas school practice includes administrative leadership and the utilization of resources (Anyon et al., 2016; Opdenakker & Van Damme, 2006; Rumberger & Palardy, 2005; Thapa et al., 2013). If students do not feel their needs are being met by their school environment their emotional, psychological and academic needs are at risk (Cohen et al., 2009; Connell & Welborn, 1991; Libbey, 2004). Are U.S. Schools Obsolete?: Examining An Anti-Black Carceral System Of Schooling, Re’Nyqua Farrington
Black Educology Mixtape "Journal"
When studying the link between U.S. prisons and schools, educational research widely relies on the school-to-prison pipeline (STTP) to understand how students are funneled from the schoolhouse to the jailhouse. However, this track critiques the STTP framework for its limitations in understanding how schools operate like prisons for Black students. Further, this track applies a prison abolitionist perspective to analyze the function of schooling for Black students and suggests that Black educational justice and liberation exist outside of the modern-day schoolhouse. Thus, this track begins by specifying the connections between U.S. schools and prison abolition. It goes on to explicate …
