Morphological Variation In Three-Dimensional Printed Replicas, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Bernard Means, Edward G. Iglesias, Kreg Mosier Jan 2018

Morphological Variation In Three-Dimensional Printed Replicas, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Bernard Means, Edward G. Iglesias, Kreg Mosier

CRHR Research Reports

Employed primarily for outreach and education, the three-dimensional (3D) printer used in this analysis provides a means of producing tangible models of fragile and restricted-use specimens for students from a wide variety of disciplines, and is used here to produce prints associated with historic and prehistoric cultural objects. Recognizing that inconsistencies occur in 3D prints due to environmental variables, this exploratory effort was aimed at identifying the geometry that deviates most from the original scan data. A total of five replicas were printed then compared by calculating the gap distance between the nominal (original scan data) and measured data (scan …

The Archaeology Of Sam Rayburn Reservoir, Edward B. Jelks Jan 2017

The Archaeology Of Sam Rayburn Reservoir, Edward B. Jelks

CRHR Research Reports

This is an archeological study of the McGee Bend Reservoir (Sam Rayburn Reservoir) area of eastern Texas as revealed through the analysis of 14 sites that were excavated there between 1956 and 1962. The reservoir, currently under construction on the Angelina River near Jasper, will be some 50 miles long when completed in 1965, with major arms extending up Ayish and Attoyac bayous. The lake will be named for the late Sam Rayburn.

Most of the archeological work was done during extended field seasons in the fall months of 1956, 1957, and 1960; a brief season in the fall of …

2016 Archaeological Investigations At The Sanders Site (41lr2), Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson, Mark Walters Jan 2016

2016 Archaeological Investigations At The Sanders Site (41lr2), Timothy K. Perttula, Bo Nelson, Mark Walters

CRHR Research Reports

The T. M. Sanders site (41LR2) is a large and impressive ancestral Caddo mound center and village situated on an alluvial terrace (450 ft. amsl) at the mouth of Bois d’Arc Creek and the Red River. With the permission of the landowners (the Crawford family and the Sanders family), periodic archaeological and geophysical investigations have been conducted across much of the 200+ acres of the Sanders site since 2013; this article primarily discusses the work done in March 2016. These archaeological investigations, including controlled surface collections and shovel testing, recovered significant new information from many of the 39 non-mound habitation …

The Late Prehistoric Of The East Fork Of The Trinity River, Wilson W. Crook Iii, Mark D. Hughston Jan 2016

The Late Prehistoric Of The East Fork Of The Trinity River, Wilson W. Crook Iii, Mark D. Hughston

CRHR Research Reports

Over the last 42 years, the authors have studied in detail the sites and archeological remains ascribed to the Late Prehistoric period of the East Fork of the Trinity River and its tributaries. This includes 20 major sites and a larger number of smaller campsites that occur within a 75 km by 15 km north-south corridor from Collin County in the north to northwestern Kaufman County in the south. As part of this study, we have accessed and examined all known extant collections from previous investigations with a combined artifact assemblage of nearly 32,000 specimens. In addition, we obtained access …

Documentation Of Caddo Ceramic Vessels In The Texas Parks And Wildlife Department Holdings From Goliad State Park, Timothy K. Perttula, Robert Z. Selden Jr. Feb 2015

Documentation Of Caddo Ceramic Vessels In The Texas Parks And Wildlife Department Holdings From Goliad State Park, Timothy K. Perttula, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

CRHR Research Reports

On February 6, 2015, three Caddo vessels from an unknown site or sites were documented at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Archeology Laboratory, where the standard suite of metadata was collected, accompanied by photographs and 3D models of each vessel. While the donor of these vessels remains unknown, stylistic and technological attributes can be used to posit the potential region of origin.

There are three 3D models included in this report of NAGPRA documentation. To manipulate, measure, and otherwise quantify variability in the models, this document must be downloaded, then opened in either Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. These …

Trammel's Trace On Printed Maps Of The 19th Century, Kelley A. Snowden Feb 2015

Trammel's Trace On Printed Maps Of The 19th Century, Kelley A. Snowden

CRHR Research Reports

Trammel’s Trace was a nineteenth century road that traversed East Texas. Recognized today as a historic cartographic feature, this road appeared in different ways on nineteenth century printed published maps over time, and in the mid-to-late nineteenth century was reduced from a route to a fragment. This study is the first to examine the portrayal of the Trace as a historic cartographic feature, how it was presented to the general public, how its portrayal changed over time, and why it appears on the maps at all. In addition, this study is the first to use geographic information systems (GIS) to …

Woodland Period Sites In The Middle Trinity River Basin, Houston And Madison Counties, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula Jan 2015

Woodland Period Sites In The Middle Trinity River Basin, Houston And Madison Counties, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

CRHR Research Reports

Woodland period sites of the inland Mossy Grove tradition are common in the middle Trinity River basin in East central Texas. The study of lands along the Trinity River and several tributaries in Houston and Madison counties identified an abundance of Woodland period sites dating from 2155-1180 years B.P. on alluvial landforms and terraces as well as upland landforms overlooking the Trinity River floodplain. Several of these Woodland period sites have midden deposits and features that are indicative of more intensive and permanent settlements along the Trinity River, and the earlier Woodland period sites are marked by Gary and Kent …

Cultural Implications Of Late Quaternary Environmental Change In Northeastern Texas, Michael B. Collins, C. Britt Bousman Jan 2015

Cultural Implications Of Late Quaternary Environmental Change In Northeastern Texas, Michael B. Collins, C. Britt Bousman

CRHR Research Reports

Northeastern Texas is one of the most intensely studied archaeological regions of the state, principally for the two reasons that (1) archaeologically-rich Caddoan manifestations have long attracted interest and (2) many large land-modifying projects, such as reservoirs and strip mines, have occasioned environmental studies which include investigations of cultural resources. This greater amount of activity relative to other regions in the state has generally prevailed for more than a century (Guy 1990) and prospects are good that archaeologists will continue to intensely research the area in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, however, they will be hard-pressed to keep pace with the …
