In 2021, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Data Library and Archives (DLA), a part of the MBLWHOI (Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) Library, received a grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Recordings at Risk (RAR) program to catalog, digitize, preserve, and make available historic films and videos of Alvin, the first-of-its-kind manned submersible vessel that has shown us more of the deep ocean than had ever been possible and transformed our understanding of life on Earth.

With our IT department preparing to upgrade the University of Georgia’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library (UGA Law Library) website from Drupal 7 to 8 this fall, a web developer, an archivist, and a librarian teamed up a year ago to make plans for preserving thousands of born-digital images. We wanted to harvest photographs housed only in web-based photo galleries on the law school website and import them into our repository’s collection. The problem? Digital librarians work to balance the sometimes competing goals of stewardship and access all while being responsive to the needs of patrons, content owners, and creators. This presentation explores the often unforeseen challenges and issues that can arise with the creation and management of digital collections. While ingesting digitized works into a repository brings up ever-present concerns such as copyright, others challenges exist within the realm of privacy (stalking, harassment, digital anonymity), plagiarism, and ownership (false claims of ownership) that are almost always unexpected.

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA)’s Academic Resources & Repository System (CALASYS) is an important initiative to curate its members’ research works, the organizational archival materials, and other cultural resources. CALASYS uses Omeka, an open source web-publishing platform, to store, link, display, and exhibit its collections. During its development, several aspects of the platform have been significantly improved due to the effort of the CALASYS Group and the CALA members.

The University of North Texas Scholarly Works collections functions as our institution’s open access repository. This summer, we conducted a preliminary analysis of the collection’s holdings to assess our progress in archiving UNT faculty research in support of our Open Access and Long-term Digital Stewardship policy as passed in 2012. As we do not subscribe to any current research information systems (CRIS), this analysis took the form of a census using current faculty senate data to understand who is and is not contributing to the repository. Wyoming Scholar’s Repository (WySR), is an initiative by the University of Wyoming Libraries to support our scholars and provide a Green Open Access solution. WySR (http://repository.uwyo.edu/) disseminates a wide variety of scholarship, including faculty papers, student scholarship, conference proceedings, and journals.
