Presented from the perspective of someone responsible for creating the digital objects that will eventually be included in a digital preservation program, this poster session will identify common issues that make the management and preservation of digital objects more challenging. Digital preservation needs to be talked about within the digitization workflow, because it takes a lot of work to produce the best digital objects possible. We are often focused on the immediate use of the digital objects and less focused on their long-term use. At the University of Louisville a merger of archives and special collections had been discussed for decades, but for a variety of reasons, always dismissed. There were practical reasons in favor of it, but there were some significant internal barriers that made it easier to keep things as they were. But in 2012 things changed. Heightened appreciation for the traditional and emerging roles of special collections in university libraries, institutional budget concerns, key retirements and gradual replacement of people resistant to change, and an inclusive approach to planning, all aligned to make the merger seem like a natural progression for …

Mentoring those in the archival field is critical to the development of any professional, or budding professional archivist. The mentoring relationship is one that has the potential to inform, nurture, encourage those on both sides of the relationship. This article explores that relationship and the frameworks that foster such mentoring programs.
